The Stratford Journal 50 years ago... thursday, May 9, 1974 Receive Awards at Sports Banquet Peter Rock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Rock, was presented the coveted George Davel award Tuesday evening at the annual all-sports banquet. The national “W” award was given to Todd Weigel.

Trophies awarded included the most valuable in football, Carl Moellea; wrestling, Todd Weigel, and basketball, Dick Chrouser. In girls’ sports, Pattie Carl was the most valuable player in volleyball and Zadra Meyer in basketball. Jim Weichelt received the fan of the year trophy. 25 years ago... wednesday, May 12, 1999 Athletic Awards Stratford athletes were honored at the 36th annual Lions Club All-Sports Banquet. Mel Guenther presented Ryan Tackes with the George Davel Memorial Award, the highest honor for male athletes at Stratford High School. Tackes was active in football, wrestling and baseball.

Nicole Pribnow accepted her award for Female Athlete of the Year, the highest honor for female athletes from Stratford Area Chamber of Commerce president Craig Warosh. Pribnow was active in cheerleading, basketball and softball. The Marathon Journal 50 years ago... thursday, May 9, 1974 Marathon Special Awards Activities On Tuesday, May 14, class day exercises will be held. At the exercise, the seniors pass on their last will and testament to some deserving underclassmen and they will also prophecy the future of the members of their own class. The awards which the students have earned because of their participation will also be made.

Little League Needs Organizer Alex Szymanski announced at the monthly meeting that he would no longer beable to take over the Little League organizer duties because of his new work schedule. He has been the organizer of the league since it started.

The Record-Review 50 years ago... thursday, May 9, 1974 A’s At State Eight Edgar High School musicians received “A’s” at the State Solo-Ensemble contest held at Eau Claire. The musicians were Carol Braun, Diane Jagodzinski, Cathy Adamski, Linda Schueller, Jayne Reiche, Jean Bauman, Alice King and Judy Heil.

Seven Athens High School musicians also received “A’s” at the State SoloEnsemble contest recently. They were Jeff Haines, Cheryl Karow, John Peter, Randy Scheffler, Karen Giese, Steve Peter and Rick Ewan.

Badger Staters at Athens High Dawn Riske and John Peter have been elected Athens High School Badger Girl and Badger Boy State representative. Their parents are Mr. and Mrs. Bob Riske and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Peter. Alternates are Cheryl Zocher and Andy Braun.

The purpose of the Badger State is to bring to the boys and girls of Wisconsin a knowledge of the fundamental principles of American government through actual practice. The events will happen in June. The Record-Review 25 years ago... wednesday, May 12, 1999 Rib Falls land plan proposed A Town of Rib Falls Land Use Committee last week Wednesday recommended a minimum size of five acres for residential sites on land now classified as agricultural and that the Big Rib River be protected from housing developments.

Committee spokesman Andy Johnson said that the committee’s plan follows from a strong feeling coming through that the Big Rib River should be protected, rather than carved up for development.

Edgar trustees ok Heil Subdivision The Edgar Village Board unanimously approved hiring Wausau engineering firm Becher-Hoppe and Associates to design an 11-lot subdivision in Edgar’s southeast corner. It is expected that subdivision owners, Jerry and Joe Heil, Edgar, will construct 10 spec homes on the developed lots.
