From past files of The Star News 10 Years Ago April 24, 2014 No new name for Medford Cooperative Efforts to change the name of the Medford Cooperative to reflect its expanding market area met with a setback Monday morning when producer members turned down the change by a wide margin.

The vote for the change came at the cooperative’s annual meeting held at the Centennial Community Center in Stetsonville. A standing-room only crowd of several hundred area residents attended the meeting to hear the cooperative board’s reasons for wanting the change and to ask questions.

CEO Chip Courtney said the board and management were all very proud of the Medford Cooperative name and what it means to the area. However, he noted that with the expanding regional market for goods and services offered by the cooperative, that name did not carry as much relevance for those outside the immediate area.

25 Years Ago April 28, 1999 Tempers flare over debate on “center” schools

After two hours of discussion and sometimes contentious debate, the Medford Area School Board backed away from considering an option to split the district’s elementary schools into “center” schools. Under that option, all preschool and kindergarten students would have attended Stetsonville Elementary School and all first through fourth graders would have attended Medford Area Elementary School. All fifth-graders would go to the middle school.

As one might expect, the room was filled with mostly Stetsonville area parents who objected to that plan. Although, there were a few parents in favor of it. 50 Years Ago April 25, 1974 ‘Money no Barrier for Services’ says Action Agency Head

75 Years Ago April 28, 1949 Westboro Conservation Club Chooses Name

At their meeting Thursday night, the newly formed conservation club at Westboro decided on the name “Westboro Conservation and Recreation Club.” Membership in the club totals over 70 persons.

By-laws were instituted and a seven-member executive board was elected. They are: Emil Kure, Bob Becker, John Novak, Walt Ahlers, Herman Grittner, Arvid Peterson and Bob Hanson.

100 Years Ago April 24, 1924 Teegarden Will Take Road Office Position

R.E. Teegarden will take the position of assistant to Taylor County Road Commissioner C. Kelnhofer, left vacant by the resignation of W.C. Miller. This change will be effective May 1st.

Mr. Teegarden has resigned his office as chairman of the Town of Cleveland and chairman of the Taylor County board of supervisors.
