The Stratford Journal 50 years ago... thursday, April 25, 1974 Dedicate New St. Joseph Entrance A new front entance to St. Joseph’s Catholic church, a long discussed project, became a reality April 18, when dedication services were held at the completion of the work. Bishop Freking, La Crosse, gave the blessing of the entrance.

A reception was held in honor of the Bishop in St. Joseph’s parish hall, to which all members of the parish were invited. The Rosary Altar society of the parish served refreshments.

25 years ago... wednesday, April 28, 1999 She has touched the future Joan Wood, teacher and principal at St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Stratford, was honored with a retirement party Sunday afternoon. Past and present St. Joseph’s Catholic School students and their families joined together to give their best wishes. Wood has been at St. Joseph’s for 30 years. Nikolai is board prez Francis Nikolai will remain Stratford School Board president for the 1999-2000 term. School board members held elections for the officer positions at Monday night’s reorganizational meeting.

Also elected to officer seats were Marty Kramer, clerk; John Zuelke, treasurer; and Darlene Schmitt, vice president. The Marathon Journal 50 years ago... thursday, April 25, 1974 St. Matthew’s Break Ground for Church A ground-breaking ceremony was held Sunday morning, April 21, after the morning service of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Marathon. It was at the site of the proposed new church lot on First and Hemlock Streets. Turning the first gilded spade of ground was Pastor Otto, followed by president Wayne Hanke and chairman of the building-planning committee Harold Hanke. Other members of the committee are Roger Kraft, Oscar Dirks, Robert Gresens and Leonard Booth, treasurer of the building fund.

The Record-Review 50 years ago... thursday, April 25, 1974 Grass Fires in Area Plague Fire Departments Grass fires have presented area fire departments with problems during the past week. On Tuesday of last week, the Athens department was called three times. Fires were put out at Janke Construction, the village disposal plant and the Henry Becker home in the town of Halsey.

Edgar firemen were called Thursday to help put out a fire on the Gary Bauman property, Route 1, Edgar. Several acres of grass, brush and trees were burned over in that blaze about noon.

In Marathon, neighbors helped put out a grass fire at the John Warner residence, Route 1. New Owner Russ Kocha, formerly of Schofield, is the new owner of Green’s Quik Shop Supermarket in Marathon. Russ took over ownership from Bob Green on Monday. Bob will maintain the variety and clothing store as well as Green’s Hardware. Russ formerly operated Rusty’s Supermarket in Wausau and the Dog ‘n Suds drive-in at Tomahawk. The Record-Review 25 years ago... wednesday, April 28, 1999 Rib Falls election is reversed Incumbent Lawrence Stelzel was sworn as Town of Rib Falls chairman last week following an acknowledgment by election officials that the procedure used to break a tie vote in the April 6 election was incorrect. Initially, election officials named Diana Behnke, Stelzel’s challenger, as the new town chairman. Edgar safety patrol trip Edgar Elementary School eighth grade students Katie Haupt and Kelli Jo Larsen earned an April 22-26 trip to Washington D.C. sponsored by the Marathon County Bus Patrol, Inc. The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department chaperoned 20 county youth on the trip. The safety patrol students wrote essays and volunteered in the school to be chosen for the tour.

1999 - Badger State

These Athens High School juniors will attend Badger State events this year. The Badger State selections are, left to right front row, Amanda Stencil alternate, and Jackie Steen; back row, Chuck Miller, Jeremy Schreiner and Ben Schultz. Badger Boys State will be held at Ripon College and Badger Girls State will be held at UWMadison.

1999 - College for Kids

Six sixth graders from Stratford were selected to attend the College for Kids at UWStevens Point. The program is coordinated by Marilyn Meyers, director of the Gifted and Talented progrm. Participants were Kyle Laessig, Christopher Kafka, Lucas Behringer, Sabrina Schaefer and Nicole Picotte. Missing from the photo is Jamie Viegut.
