The Stratford Journal 50 years ago... thursday, April 18, 1974 Start Remodeling ofVillage Buildings At Tuesday evening’s special meeting of the village board, plans were approved to remodel village hall. The present library will be remodeled to be used both as a kitchen and as an office for the village clerk and the chief of police. The library will move into what is now the council room.

The room now occupied by the fire department equipment will be carpeted and panneled and will be used as a hall and meeting place for 120 people.

Trip Taken by Local FFA Students On April 5, the junior ag students went to Green Bay for a presentation of electric motors and machinery. The class also stopped at Midwest Breeders for a tour of the building. The guidance committee is sponsoring an agri-business career night for vo-ag juniors and seniors and instructors. It will be at the NCTI inWausau. The Marathon Journal 50 years ago... thursday, April 18, 1974 Badger Boy and Girl Candidates Announced Marathon High School will again have the opportunity to send one junior girl and boy to the Badger Girl and Badger Boy State respectively. The sponsoring organizations are the American Legion Post and Legion Auxiliary.

The candidates are picked on the basis of scholastic standing, extra curricular activities and adaptability to the program. The candidates this year are Eileen Ruplinger as Badger Girl and Thomas Steidinger as Badger Boy. Andrea Paff and Michael Starzinski were selected as alternates Speaking Contest Winners Announced In a recent 4-H speaking contest held in Stratford, Debbie Marzynski, Cassel 4-H, was named outstanding speaker in the senior division, including members 15 and older. Her speech was entitled “Suicide.”

Other winners were Glen Scholebo,Wien Wildcats, in the intermediate division and Janel Mellenthin, Romeo Busy Beavers, in the junior division.

The Record-Review 50 years ago... thursday, April 18, 1974 Tornado Damage A barn on the Donald Walters farm, about four miles west of Athens, was extensively damaged by a tornado that dipped down about 3 p.m. Friday afternoon during a thunder and rainstorm. The Walters family did not notice the funnel cloud, but Mrs. Gerald Luterbach, a neighor, said she saw it.

The barn will have to be rebuilt and there was some damage to the other building and the house from flying 10 by 10 timbers. The family was not injured nor were 40 cows and 30 young stock in the barn when the tornado hit.

Tony Lenard Wins Cycle Racing Award Tony Lenard, formerly of Edgar, earned enough points in motorcycle short-track racing during last year’s season to win the amateur championship in the 360 class.

In January of this year, he also was undefeated in the motorcycle open class at the Merrill Ice Drags. Lenard rides a Bueltaco motorcycle. The Record-Review 25 years ago... wednesday, April 21, 1999 Rep. Petrowski voices complaints State Rep. Jerry Petrowski (R-Marathon) took ginseng trade concerns to the second in command in China in Chicago last week. Petrowski met with Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and called on China to lower tariff’s that block Wisconsin ginseng’s entry into that country. The assemblyman also expressed concerns over fraudulent sale of Chinese ginseng as higher priced Wisconsin root in Chinese retail herb shops. Kraft Foods, Inc recognizes Marathon Cheese as top supplier Kraft Foods, Inc. has announced that Marathon Cheese Corporation, Marathon, has been selected as a winner of the Kraft Foods Rick Stuedemann Award for Supplier Excellence.

Marathon Cheese Corporation, founded in 1954 by Ray and Marie Goldbach, is a packager of quality natural cheese for retail, food service and industrial markets. It has plants in Booneville, Miss., Marathon, Medford and Dorchester.

1999 - Wirkus grandchildren

Philip and Beatrice Wirkus of the Town of Wien are well represented at Edgar Public Schools this year. The couple boasts 13 grandchildren at Edgar Public Schools enrolled in all grades except seventh. The Wirkus grandchildren are from left, first row: Brandon Wirkus, kindergarten; Kelly Wirkus, grade 1; Kody Wirkus, grade 2; Melanie Switlick, grade 3; Heather Wirkus, grade 4; Kraig Wirkus, grade 4. Second row: Tiffany Switlick, grade 5; Katie Wirkus, grade 6; Stephanie Seubert, grade 8; Darin Seubert, grade 9; Ashley Bergs, grade 10; Danielle Bergs, grade 11, and Jason Seubert, grade 12. The Wirkuses have a total of five great-grandchildren, 24 grandchildren and 11 children.

1974 - Workshop Bound

Mike Starzinski, Tom Steidinger, Chaperone Scott Schutte, Russ Schumacher and Rick Ross, Marathon High School, will be attending the conservation workshop at the Trees for Tomorrow Environmental Center, Eagle River this month.
