April 3, 2014 On target for better health 10 Years Ago A recent study of health trends across the state has ranked Taylor county as the fourth healthiest county in Wisconsin.
Despite the good news that Taylor County residents are as a whole healthier and happier than those living in 68 other counties in the state, local public health officials and policy makers view the results as a map to what the county needs to do in order to maintain that rank for years to come.
25 Years Ago April 7, 1999 Hospital plans new assisted living complex
Memorial Hospital in Medford plans to break ground early next month for a $2 million Residential Care Apartment Complex (RCAC) to be known as Country Gardens.
The two-story, 24-unit assisted living complex will be located on hospital property on Cedar Street, just west of the Memorial Nursing Home parking lot.
The architect is CR Meyer of Oshkosh.
50 Years Ago April 4, 1974 Haffermann Wins Mayor Race; Three New Aldermen in City; Referendum Ratified by Voters
Charles Haffermann, 58, Medford Soo-Line depot agent, scored a 693-522 victory of William Van Laarhoeven Sr, 52, president of Van’s Equipment Co. in the race for the city mayor Tuesday. The incumbent George F. Meyer did not choose to seek a second term.
Haffermann, having served as supervisor-alderman in the third ward carried all four wards in the city. Van Laarhoven had served two terms as mayor from 1969 to 1972.
75 Years Ago April 7, 1949 A.A. Prochnow Wins County School Office
Capturing 20 of the 25 precincts, A.A. Prochnow amassed a total 2,323 votes in Tuesday’s election to unseat R.J. Forehand for the office of Taylor County superintendent of schools. Forehand, who was seeking re-election to an office he has held since 1937, received a total of 1,277 votes. The three wards in the city of Medford do not vote for this office.
Prochnow’s name did not appear on the ballot as his qualifications for the office were not made in time with the county clerk, making it necessary that his name either be written in or a sticker used.
April 3, 1924 Goodrich Town Hall Referendum Carries 100 Years Ago Goodrich voters decided at Tuesday’s election that they would build a town hall, to cost $2000. The vote on this referendum was 43 to 27.
It is planned to build the hall this season, on State Highway 64, at the southwest corner of section 22, where the town’s machine shed is located.
