Co-op,

from p.13

JV program differently.

“My recommendation would be to approve one JV team with them. I don’t want a co-op where two Greenwood kids play on this team and two Greenwood kids play on the other team, and now we cannot take any of the Loyal kids up to varsity,” said Montalvo.

“So you want a Loyal JV team and a mixed JV team?” said board member Dave Clintsman.

“Correct. And once you decide who’s on the Loyal JV team, we have four or five players in mind that we want to see get varsity experience throughout the course of the year (so those players would not participate on the Loyal-Greenwood JV team),” said Montalvo.

“We have a good problem. We have good numbers. And we have a lot of pitchers. But to get them to develop, we need to split these two JV teams. My recommendation is to keep the Loyal kids practicing in Loyal and join Greenwood for games.”

He said his recommendation was also because Greenwood had a completely different schedule than Loyal so it could be hard to coordinate, but he was certainly willing to work with Greenwood.

“If we allow some of our kids to go play on their team, I have no problem with that. We are more than happy to have our JV kids — if I asked them, weekly, what games do you want to play and who wants to go and play and get some innings in? I think more than enough would say, ‘Yeah, I’ll miss a JV practice to go play in a JV game.’” He also said two of Greenwood’s JV games were on Wednesday, and he knew that Loyal tried to avoid that night because of church classes, so he didn’t know if that would be an issue.

Chris Lindner said as far as the Wednesday games were concerned, he could contact the local parishes and make sure their CCD classes wouldn’t conflict with the games. One of the parents said CCD would be done the last week in April this year, so it may not conflict with the games, anyway.

Loyal School Board member Derek Weyer made a motion to move forward with the JV baseball co-op, as long as Montalvo’s recommendations were followed. That motion was approved unanimously.
