CAPD officer involved in high speed chase

An officer was requested to assist a Clark County Sheriff’s Office Deputy in a vehicle pursuit at 1:13 a.m. on February 12 that occurred west of Colby. The officer was advised to set up stop sticks somewhere on County Road N. The officer activated his emergency lights and drove westbound on County Road N.

The deputy stated that he was driving on County Road N near Robin Avenue. The suspect was traveling at a high rate of speed and the CAPD officer was not going to reach the intersection in time to put stop sticks out. The deputy requested that the CAPD officer catch up to the pursuit.

The officer was notified that the pursuit had continued north on County Road E towards Curtiss as the officer was approaching the intersection of County Road E and County Road N. The deputy said he was still at a high rate of speed and crossing the center line. The deputy said he was turning west on Hwy. 29 from the Curtiss exit.

The deputy pursued the vehicle onto Prey Avenue and the driver jumped out of the driver’s seat and ran into a nearby woods.

At approximately 1:29 a.m., the CAPD officer arrived onscene and observed the Clark County deputy standing in the driveway of a residence. The officer was told the suspect ran into the woods on the property. The officer grabbed his patrol vehicle rifle and walked down the driveway of the property as there were two buildings near the driveway.

The officer shined his flashlight through the windows in the first building as it appeared no one was in the garage. The next building appeared to be the residence of the property as a male walked out of the residence. The officer yelled to the man to show the officer his hands. The unidentified male complied and told the officer that he saw a male with a brown sweatshirt and jeans run by his window of his residence.

The officer then heard another male yell something to the northwest of the residence. The officer then saw a male who was later identified as a 17-year-old Owen man laying in the grass. The officer yelled at the male who was laying down on his stomach to lift his hands off the ground and hold them there as the Clark County Deputy approached him. The officer had his rifle pointed at the man while the deputy put handcuffs on him. The officer then assisted the man to his feet as the deputy took him near his patrol vehicle.

The man was charged with a felony count of fleeing/ eluding an officer, and misdemeanor accounts of resisting or obstructing an officer and criminal damage to property. The man will appear in court on March 20 for his initial appearance.
