Assistant Fire Chief Dan Dvorak, lead fireman on the scene, said that the department was called to the fire at 8:40 a.m. where it found a 20 by 20 foot maintenance area engulfed in flames.
Dvorak said that the fire had burned through the mill’s roof trusses but 11 Edgar firemen, backed up by Marathon Fire Department’s tanker, extinguished the blaze before any major damage was done to the mill’s critical machinery. The fire is thought to have started when sparks from a grinding wheel ignited some dust.

1999 - Stratford’s finest
Thirty-nine calves, weighing about 200 pounds each, were killed when this semitruck overturned on CT-H about one and one-half miles south of Edgar. The accident happened Friday morning about 5:40. The driver said a tire blew out on the rig, causing it to go into the ditch on the right-hand side of the road. The wheels on the right side of the truck were in the snow-filled ditch and started to sink. When the 175 calves in the trailer shifted, the rig tipped on its right side. There were no injuries to the driver or his passenger from Indiana. Sheriff’s deputy Tom Niemuth and Edgar Chief of Police Cal Ledbetter were called to the accident.
