Open enrollment caps set at Maple Grove School

The Athens Board of Education on Jan. 15 approved the amount of space available for open enrollment students in each school building for the 2024-25 school year. Wisconsin’s student open enrollment application period runs from Monday, Feb. 5 until 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30.

Based on next school year’s enrollment projections, there is no limit set on the number of open enrollment students that can attend school in four-year-old kindergarten through 12th grades at Athens Elementary and Athens Middle/High School.

The school board did approve seat limits in each grade at Maple Grove Charter School in Hamburg, which continues to see an increase in student enrollment each year. Andrea Sheridan, Athens schools superintendent, said Maple Grove Charter School had an enrollment of 80 students three years ago, 91 students last year and 107 students this year.

“The Maple Grove Governance Board has set a capacity limit of 135 students who can attend school at Maple Grove Charter School next school year based on the size of the facility, its bathrooms and gym,” she said.

A seat limit of 23 children is set in each of the kindergarten and first grade classes at Maple Grove next school year. A seat limit of 25 children is set in second and third grades at Maple Grove but there is no limit set for fourth and fifth grades at Maple Grove next school year.

The administration projects a student enrollment of 165 out of a capacity of 336 students at Athens Elementary School next school year. Athens Middle School, which consists of sixth, seventh and eighth grades, is projected to have 79 students out of a capacity of 204 next school year. Athens High School is projected to have 108 students out of a capacity of 272 students next school year.

Other business

n The board met in closed session and then reconvened into open session to approve administrative contracts for principals Robin Hanson, Joy Redmann and Juli Gauerke-Peter for the 2024-25 school year.The school board also conducted school district superintendent Andrea Sheridan’s evaluation.

n Board members approved Casey Connor as an Athens Middle School volunteer wrestling coach.

n Athens High School will host FFA competitions after school on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

n Student Jennifer Espinoza is coordinating with teacher Michelle Murkowski to organize the FBLA Regional competition on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Athens High School.

n There will be a pops concert at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, at Athens High School. The event will include performances by the high school band and choir along with a student art show.
