stratford journal 50 years ago... thursday, DECEMBER 20, 1973 Lions hold annual Christmas party The annual Lions Christmas party for the club was held at the Casa Loma Supper Club, Marshfield. Twenty-nine members and their wives were in attendance. Dr. Gerald Schroeder directed the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield–Wood County Swing Choir in several numbers for the evening entertainment. Following the dinner, Lion Bob Hubert presented Mrs. William Schorr and Mrs. William Drexler Sr with a centerpiece. Winners receiving gifts were Mrs. Michael Kubiaczyk and Mrs. Wendell Creasey. Wednesday, December 23, 1998 Tiger football players earn top honors The post-season awards keep rolling in for the 1998 Stratford Tiger football team. Earning first team All Conference honors were Lee Umnus, Luke Weichelt, Lee Spindler and Ryan Tackes. Second team honors went to Matt Spindler, Jo Gliniecki, Nate Bluhm and Tackes. Earning honorable mention were Andy Wilson, Jake Haupt, Jim Wiesman and Dustin Reuter. The All-Conference team is selected by a vote of conference coaches.
Record Review 50 years ago... thursday, December 20, 1973 Janice Literski reigns as dance princess Janice Literski, escorted by Ron Mauer, reigned as princess over “Winter Wonderland,” the Athens High School Christmas dance. On her court were Debbie Murkowski and Kathy Miller and their escorts, Rick Witucki and Rand Huebner, respectively. The dance was held in the high school gym. Music was recorded. Maria Wenzel, Spanish club advisor, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomforde chaperoned. 25 years ago... wednesday, December 23, 1998 A Bigger Marawood The WIAA has proposed enlarging the Marawood Conference from 10 to 16 schools including three Catholic High Schools and then splitting the schools possibly by sport, into various divisions. At stake in these various plans is whether traditional school rivalries – such as Edgar and Marathon High in basketball, Edgar and Stratford in football – will continue to be part of the Central Wisconsin small town eperience.
WIAA executive director Douglas Chickering said that he proposed the bigger Marawood Conference so that conference schools could themselves develop the divisions they think best and, if schools are unhappy, change the splits as they see fit.
1998-Spirit of Giving
The Leadership Group collected food for the Stratford Food Pantry last week. The group of fifth graders learned about and encouraged citizenship during the month of December. Citizen of the Year
Richard Schroeder was honored as Edgar Jaycee Citizen of the Year at a banquet held in his honor at the Buck-a-neer, Rozellville. Jaycee Jill Tess presents Schroeder with his plaque.
