The Colby Hornets golf program was a bit closer to home on Tuesday, May 11. The Hornets found themselves playing in more familiar settings this time, testing their skills in Marshfield and the Marshfield Country Club.

That familiarity led to much better scores after the Hornets had tried their hands on one of the more premier golf courses in the state in Eau Claire the week before.

“Spirits were up and scores were lower this match,” Colby head coach Brand Butkus said approvingly. “The course was surprisingly dry and in good shape.”

With the course in excellent shape, the Hornets were able to finish ninth as a team with a score of 233 strokes. Colby picked up three conference points for their efforts.

McDonald/Regis won the meet with a team score of 169 strokes. Stanley-Boyd was second with 181 and Columbus Catholic finished third with 188 strokes.

For the first time all season, it was a new Hornet leading the way for Colby. Junior Carson Rau carded one of his best results on the day, finishing with 55 strokes to finish 37th overall.

Butkus had high praise for Rau, but also for all his varsity golfers, who all saw better results from the week before.

“Carson shot his season best this far, and there was good improvement in everyone else’s game as well.”

Jaden Underwood finished one spot behind Rau for 38th place, though both golfers finished with 55 strokes. Following closely behind them was Justin Hill. Hill’s 58 strokes earned him 43rd overall.

Maggie Sobeck and Tony Derrico rounded things out, finishing in 48th and 50th place with their scores of 65 and 73 strokes.

The Hornets will enjoy a rare three days off, and will look forward to practicing and working on honing their skills before making their way to Cadott and the Meadowview Golf Course for an 18 hole invitational.

“We’re definitely looking forward to some nights of practice before we go to Cadott,” Butkus said. “We’re going to use that time to work on some things and everyone is eager to improve their games and get better.”
