C ounty Taylor CONGRATULATIONS Laura Beyer Educator What do you teach? of the Month I teach 4th grade reading, math, spelling, phonics, and religion. I also teach science to 4th, 5th, and 6th grade at Holy Rosary School. How long have you been an educator? I started teaching at Holy Rosary in 1988, so this is my 37th year. Who was your favorite/best teacher when you were a student and why? My favorite teacher was Mrs. Umhaffer. She taught 4th grade. She encouraged me to write stories and she let me read them aloud to my classmates. Why did you choose this profession? Whenever I was asked what I wanted to be while I was growing up, I always said - Teacher. I would come home from school and play “school” with the neighborhood kids, I just always wanted to teach. What inspires you to continue as an educator? The small moments inspire me to continue to teach. These are the moments during the day when I see a student grasp a concept or make a connection. The smiles from these small successes make teaching worth it. What is your favorite memory as an educator? I have a lot of favorite memories! Reallty too many to pick just one from. I remember one time when school was relocated for a few weeks, my classroom was in an entry way of an old building. It was spring and a robin built her nest just inside of our door. The students and I got to watch her build the nest, lay her eggs, and watch them hatch. We kept the door propped open for several weeks as the babies grew. Eventually they left the nest. It was an awesome experience to see the excitement of the students as they watch this miracle of life happen right in our classroom. The students read to the babies and even wrote story problems in math about the robins.
