August 19, 1965 – The cooker used for making the sweet corn used during the Loyal Corn Festival was upgraded to make the set-up for the cooker permanent to cut down on preparatory work for the festival each year. Helping with the cooker were Mike Weyhmiller, Mick Weyhmiller, Roy Olson, and Vern Rogstad. – The Loyal Hobo Band was to take part in the Loyal Corn Festival parade this weekend. Members were Mrs. Bill Chambers, Mrs. John A. Olsen, Mrs. Art Wehrman, Malcom Doering, Richard Fellenz, Mrs. Milton Knack, John A. Olsen, Art Wehrman, Ron Naggatz, Dave Hillert, Gerry Sternitzky, Bill Chambers, Vern Dahlby, and Paul Moldenhauer. – Fresh chicken was 19 cents per pound. August 16, 2000 – Harry Toufar was hired as the new Spencer High School principal. He had formerly taught fifth and sixth grade students at Spencer for the previous 21 years of his career. He was hired after David Wessel had resigned from the principal position two weeks prior. – The Granton School District was to hold a referendum on Nov. 7 to exceed state revenue limits in order to purchase a new school bus for the district every two years. The school owned nine school buses at the time with four of the buses regularly used for routes to pick up students. – During the week, two fires caused by lightning were put out in the area. The first destroyed a barn on the Jim Dux farm along Highway 98 west of Loyal. The other set a pile of hay on fire on the Harlan and Missy Hinkelmann farm on Robin Avenue northeast of Loyal. No animals or people were harmed by the fires. – The state of Wisconsin was currently undergoing a labor shortage that was expected to worsen over the next 15 years. According to a report by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, labor force growth “will likely turn negative after 2013” with the driving factor being “the Baby Boomers are on the verge of retirement and the pool of young people is not large enough to replace them.” 90 years ago … 45 years ago ... August 15, 1935 – A petition and resolution had been made to the State Highway Commission proposing the extension of Highway 98 from the junction of Highway 73 west 6 miles to Willard, north on Highway G for a half mile and west again to connect with Federal Highways 10 and 12. The proposed route from Willard would shorten the distance of travel to Eau Claire by 29 miles for Loyal residents and 26 miles for Greenwood residents. – The Clark County Fair was to be held Aug. 27-30. “Remember When” items are taken from past issues of the Tribune Record Gleaner from 1968 to present, from the Greenwood Gleaner from 1957 to 1964, and from the Loyal Tribune prior to 1968. August 13, 1980 – Loyal's police department reported issues with bike riders in the city during a meeting of the Loyal City Council last week. The officers reported that bike riders were still out on the street at 3 a.m. and playing “hide and seek” with the officers on duty. It was suggested to the council that a system be put in place to register bikes in the city and require riders to take a safety course.
