Gilman’s Chaplinski gets state mention for second straight year


As expected, after earning the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference’s Player of the Year award in October, Gilman senior Abby Chaplinski found her name on the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association’s All-State list when it was released Friday.
Chaplinski made the honorable mention list for Division 5. She got honorable mention in Division 4 last year.
The two-time All-ECC first-team pick joins Gracie Tallier as repeat All-State honorable mentionees. Tallier, now playing at UW-River Falls, got those awards in Division 4 in 2021 and 2022.
Chaplinski, Gilman’s setter, was a leader in the team’s 18-11 season that ended with the program’s second straight regional title. The Pirates were eliminated in the WIAA post-season by eventual state runner-up Columbus Catholic 3-1 in a sectional semifinal match Oct. 31.
Chaplinski had 631 assists this season and ended her Gilman career with 2,265 assists. She averaged 7.1 assists per set.
Chaplinski had a career-high 124 kills in 2024, served at a .940 success rate with 51 aces and just 22 errors in 366 attempts, and ranked second on Gilman’s team with 405 digs, an average of 4.6 per set. She surpassed the 1,000-dig mark for her career this year as well, finishing with 1,157.
A total of 23 Division 5 players received honorable mention, including junior Delia Trader of Columbus Catholic, a secondteam All-Eastern Cloverbelt pick. From the Marawood North, Sy’Rih Hartwig of Athens also got honorable mention.
The 10-member Division 5 All-State first team includes Shelby Spata of Columbus Catholic and, from the Marawood North, Kali Heikkinen of Prentice.
The rest of the Division 5 first team features seniors Audrey Arndt and Cheyenne Wales of state champion Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, Kamdan Johnson of Florence, Abby Kirchner of Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran and Lily Shields of Newman Catholic as well as juniors Gadi Radichel of Immanuel Lutheran, Sofia Rodriguez of Sheboygan Christian and Camille Sobolewski of Newman Catholic.
Additionally from the Eastern Cloverbelt, Colby junior Daelyn Rieck was a Division 3 honorable mention pick and Loyal junior Addysen Wolf was a firstteam All-State pick in Division 4.
Additionally from the Marawood North, Phillips senior Mataya Eckert got a first-team spot in Division 4 and Abbotsford junior Faith Sperl got D4 honorable mention.
From the Great Northern Conference, Mosinee sophomore Bridget Frye, who shared Player of the Year honors with Medford’s Kayla Baumgartner, got Division 2 honorable mention as did Mosinee senior Daisy Spink. Tomahawk junior Siennah Calkins got Division 3 honorable mention.
