Medford Mayor Mike Wellner acted quickly to fill an open city council position as he chose Dave Brandner to replace Tom Gebert in the first council district. Brandner previously represented the fourth district before resigning the position before the 2010 election to move to another location in the city.

25 years ago August 5, 1998

About four months ago, the Medford Area School Board made a settlement offer in the discrimination complaint against the high school’s Red Raider Indian logo.

According to District Administrator Paul Schoenberger, the offer was an attempt to take control of the issue and have some say in the outcome versus letting the Department of Public Instruction rule on the complaint.

50 years ago August 2, 1973

Forest supervisor Wayne Mann, Park Falls, has announced the opening of the new campground on the Chequamegon Water flowage northeast of Gilman. The planned opening date is tomorrow, Friday.

“This is our first campground development built on this beautiful 2,900-acre man-made flowage,” said Mann.

75 years ago August 5, 1948

The Medford Flight of the Civil Air Patrol has received its Link trainer, according to Lee Casey, director of public information for the flight organization.

For the present the trainer is being stored in the Medford Curling club, and Casey said it would not be assembled until a permanent location had been obtained.

The trainer is for ground use only and is used primarily for instructions in instrument flying. The equipment was secured without cost through the state air patrol headquarters, and is government surplus.

100 years ago August 2, 1923

First National Bank of Medford has purchased from the Soo Line, the 200x30 feet strip of ground located between the Soo Line Tracks and Main Street. Building plans are not yet public, but it is very probable that next year will see a fine new bank building erected on this strip, which is one of the best locations in the city.

125 years ago July 23, 1898

County Treasurer John Kraemer went to Fond du Lac last Monday night where his wife is confined at a hospital. An operation for removing tumor was performed Tuesday and Mr. Kraemer desired to be present at this critical time. He returned Thursday morning and says Mrs. Kraemer is doing very nicely.

Frederick Bogk, the hustling real estate man of Milwaukee, was here Wednesday accompanied by two prospective settlers. Mr. Bogk informs us that the influx of new settlers to Northern Wisconsin was far greater than people imagined and that Taylor County was getting its full share of them.
