More than 99 percent of high school basketball players lose the final games of their senior year during the WIAA tournament.

For Medford’s Katie Messman, getting one last victory was the perfect capper to a busy week as a Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association all-star.

Messman and her Division 2 North teammates earned a satisfying 85-71 victory over the South in Friday’s WBCA All-Star Game at JustAgame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells. The South had some star power, led by Wisconsin’s Miss Basketball Samantha Terry of Baraboo, but the North’s defense put the clamps on Terry and her teammates early and led from the second quarter on.

“We played good defense,” Messman said Tuesday, one day after attending her orientation at UW-River Falls, where she intends to play collegiately. “They had Miss Basketball, but we shut her down pretty well. That really helped us.”
