Plans for a major city park pool expansion and renovation project moved forward at Tuesday’s Medford City Council committee of the whole meeting.

The proposed project will nearly double the surface area of the pool with the addition of a large zero-entry and play area. Other proposed additions include a slide and a water climbing wall. If all goes according to plan, work would begin on the pool this fall and be completed in time for the pool to open in summer 2014.

The big issues facing aldermen for the project Tuesday, were if they wanted to proceed despite being disappointed by the bid numbers and if so, how would the project be financed.

For the first part, alderman Mike Bub, noted the goal all along was to keep the project to under $750,000. However, the base bids for each of the companies were higher than that amount, before any of the additions were included. The total amount for the low-bid from Neumann Pools of Beaver Dam was $789,840.

The School District of Rib Lake will move ahead in planning to build a new elementary school. That was the unanimous decision of the school board after holding a special meeting last week to consider various options.

Preliminary estimates for the new elementary school, including a new district office area, are at about $5.7 million. It should be noted that this is a rough estimate based on the generalized plans and average costs in past elementary school building projects done by the architect.

A false alarm of burglary at the Famers State Bank caused a lot of excitement at Stetsonville yesterday morning at one o’clock.

The automatic burglar alarm started ringing at that hour and a volunteer force was quickly on the job to thwart the supposed bank robbers. While the outside of the building was being patrolled, a dog which was confined inside, created enough commotion to convince the volunteer posse that burglars were within.

Mr. J. Cover, Court reporter, who has just returned from a trip to the Jump River country, spoke as follows: I have just returned from a trip of 15 miles from a railroad, in what is called the Jump River country. I went out with a friend to look at some property, and our route took us south from Ingraham, a station on the Soo. That country will in time make a good farming country. The situation now, however, is one of considerable hardship for the settlers.
