Members of the Medford Area Fire Commission got some additional options, but took no action on the purchase of a replacement aerial truck at their regular meeting March 13. A committee of firefighters is searching for trucks that meet the specifications and price range set by the commission members last year. Committee members reported they are finding it a challenge, noting there had been some within the fire commission’s price but they had been quickly bought by other departments.

25 YEARS AGO March 25, 1998

The Medford School Board voted 6-2 to enter into mediation with the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI) over the high school’s Red Raider Indian logo, and offer to change to a different logo. The decision was based on advice board members received in closed session last month from the school attorney to settle the school logo issue before the DPI makes a ruling on a discrimination claim filed against it.

50 YEARS AGO March 22, 1973

Members of the Medford Lions club voted to pledge $300 to the scholarship fund drive for the University of Wisconsin center-Medford, at their meeting Wednesday evening, March 14. Half of the pledge is to be contributed for a scholarship this fall, and the balance for the fall of 1974. Lion member Robert Larson of the University Center spoke in regard to the drive which has been launched under the sponsorship of the Medford Area Industrial Development Foundation.

75 YEARS AGO March 18, 1948

An inspection tour of the proposed Miller dam area was conducted Wednesday by George Hartmann, state conservation forester attached to the public hunting grounds section, and Ralph Hovind, supervisor of area one, state conservation department. Accompanying Hartmann and Hovind on the inspection were Floyd Roberts, federal ranger on the Medford district; Dr. F. J. Martin, chairman of the Taylor county conservation congress; Emil Weix, W. H. Conrad. A more thorough study of maps will be made by the state men after which they will make recommendations to the state conservation department and commission.

100 YEARS AGO March 22, 1923

Under the direction of Taylor County Supt. of Schools Emma M. Lupinsky, the schools of the county are preparing to hold the contest which will select a Taylor County representative for the 1923 Wisconsin State Fair Spelling, Arithmetic, and Writing Contest. Miss Adeline Anderson of Chelsea had that honor last year. Sixteen center contests will be held in the county, on Friday, March 23rd, to enable all of the children to take part in their own localities.

125 YEARS AGO March 19, 1898

Wm. DeLap well known along this division of the Central as a brakeman on a passenger train, and who purchased the Medford cheese factory last fall is arranging to start the factory about April 1st. Mr. DeLap has been an enthusiastic student of cheese making for several years and has also had practical experience in the business, and we can see no reason why he should not make a decided success here.

Suicide Support Group to meet

Those impacted by the loss of loved ones due to being a victim of suicide or survivors of suicide are invited to participate in the Suicide Support Group.

Meetings are held on the last Sunday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Medford. The next meeting is Sunday, March 26.
