As spring approaches, so does the competition season for many student organizations. The Medford DECA (an Association of Marketing Students) and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) have started competition season with great success at both the District I DECA Competition and the Region I FBLA Regionals and have high aspirations for State and National/International competitions in the coming months.

Members of the Medford DECA/FBLA chapter competed first at the District I DECA Competition in early January at Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids. Students picked a subject area of their interest and prepared for an economics test, a content related test, and two role-plays in the content area. For the roleplays, students or teams are given a case study with a content specific problem and 10-20 minutes to prepare their solution to the problem. Each student/team presented their ideas in front of a volunteer judge and are assessed on how well they presented the solution in conjunction with marketing performance indicators.

The following students received medals/honors in the content area: Hollyann Grube – overall finalist in Apparel and Accessories Marketing Morgan Huegli – overall finalist in Automotive Services Marketing Allison Dew – 2nd Place in Economics, 2nd Place in Business Services Marketing Charles Newberry – 3rd Place in Principles of Hospitality & Tourism Gatlin Piller – 2nd Place in Principles of Business Management Hailey Murray – 1st Place in Principles of Marketing Other competing DECA members included Sigourney Bielert and Naomi Butcher in the Buying and Merchandising Team event, Bethany Jokiel in Accounting Applications, Cullen Jones in Principles of Business Management, Diezel Pocock in Principles of Marketing, and Brianna Mellady in Retail Merchandising.

The FBLA Regional competition was held at St. Croix Central High School in Hammond, WI and took place on February 4th. Students completed a test or presentation related to the business subject area they selected.

The following students placed in the following events: Holly Grube – 1st in Social Media Strategies Allison Dew – 2nd in Securities & Investments Bethany Jokiel – 4th in Accounting I Morgan Huegli – 5th in Business Calculations Sigourney Bielert – 2nd in Advertising Charles Newberry – 2nd in Hospitality & Event Management Cullen Jones – 2nd in Introduction to Business Communications Gatlin Piller – 8th in Introduction to financial Math Diezel Pocock – 6th in Introduction to Business Communications Brianna Mellady – 4th in Business Communications The majority of the Medford DECA/FBLA group will be advancing to the DECA State Career Development Conference over spring break and the FBLA State Conference in April!

Between preparing for competition for both DECA and FBLA, the Medford DECA/FBLA organization has been busy. They just held a clothing drive and collected 765 pieces of clothing to donate! The club is also planning for the Cans for a Cause can sculpture at the 2023 Taylor County Fair and to partake in cleaning for Adopt-a-Hwy this spring.
