In recent years, the county has purchased the Peterbilt chassis for its patrol trucks. On Tuesday, commission members approved spending $88,462 to purchase a Western Start 4700SF chassis from V& H of Marshfield for the new patrol truck. The approval came despite the Western Star bid price being $1,800 higher than the lowbid of $86,622.50 from JX Truck of Kronenwetter for a Peterbilt 348.

A proposal to create a grievance committee made up of five independent members of the County Board, none of which would be on the finance or personnel committees, was defeated by voice vote at last week’s committee on committees and rules. That means that the personnel committee will continue to be the grievance committee as it has been for the past several years, and as is stipulated in all labor agreements between the county and unions

January 25, 1973

James Maurina, Dorchester funeral home owner, announced Monday the purchase of William Hoeper’s interest in the Hoeper-Kraut funeral service at Owen. The firm is now known as Kraut-Maurina Funeral Service, Inc., Dorchester and Owen. Donald Kraut had purchased interest in the funeral service at Dorchester to incorporate the business to serve the area more efficiently, according to Maurina.

January 22, 1948

In line with its policy of keeping production as flexible as possible at all times, the Medford Cooperative Creamery has carried out two major experiments within recent weeks, one of them being the manufacture of dry ice cream mix and the other a dried milk for children in foreign countries. The ice cream mix test run was made this week under the observance of J. H. Uchanan of Uchanan Associates Inc., Chicago. Two ice cream specialists from his firm accompanied Mr. Uchanan to Medford for the work.

January 25, 1923

There is one car to every ten persons in Taylor County, according to the figures compiled by the Milwaukee Journal. The state average is one car to every six. Green Lake county was the highest average with one car to 3.9 persons; and Iron County is the lowest, with a car to every ten. Taylor County’s figures are: Population: 18,000; Passenger cars: 1,677; Trucks: 67; Motorcycles: 27; Total motor vehicles 1,789; Average persons to car:10.

January 22, 1898

Philip Marcus, who has been in charge of the branch store of the M. Marcus Mercantile Co. at Colby since that enterprise was started, was in the city the fore part of the week. He informed us that he will hereafter be in charge of the Rib Lake branch, the store at Colby having been discontinued.
