Organizers of the Perkinstown Snowshoe Race have announced the cancellation of this year’s event due to lack of snow and poor trail conditions. The following statement was posted on the event’s facebook page on Sunday: “Due to five days of unseasonably warm temperatures and rain on January 10 and 11, we were forced to cancel the 2013 Perkinstown Snowshoe Race.” According to Paula Liske, one of the event organizers, a review of the trail took place on Sunday and it was determined there was not enough snow to hold the snowshoe race.

January 21, 1998

A bomb threat against a Medford school bus last Friday proved to be unfounded. According to District Administrator Paul Schoenberger, an adult voice phoned the Medford Area Elementary School late Friday afternoon, saying that there was a bomb on board School Bus No. 2. Schoenberger said there was no school Friday, and that at the time, the only bus out was enroute to a Girls Basketball Game at Lakeland.

Several Medford participants in scouting were given honors Thursday at the annual meeting and appreciation banquet of Muskie Trails Boy Scout district at Club Florena, Medford. Ray Scott was named one of the scouters of the year for his services in scout financing campaigns. Special awards in recognition of support to scouting were presented to the Medford United Givers Fund, accepted by president Fred Schroeder; the Medford Lions club, accepted by past president James Klinner, and the Medford Area Chamber of Commerce, accepted by president Jack Hoesel.

January 15, 1948

Through a letter received Wednesday morning, Millard Kapitz, Rib Lake, county board chairman, was informed that he had been appointed Taylor county fuel conservation coordinator. The appointment was made by Anthony E. Madler, Madison, state fuel administrator, and is for the duration of the fuel oil shortage. The letter of appointment also requested that the chairman appoint the county clerk as deputy coordinator to handle complaints.

100 YEARS AGO

January 18, 1922

There are four women directors in the lists of directors of the seven banks of Taylor County. They are Mrs. Alice Wilkowske director of the State Bank of Gilman; Mrs. C. M. Gibson and Mrs. C. L. Gibson of the First National Bank of Medford; and Mrs. E. C. Getchel vice president of the First National Bank of Rib Lake.

125 YEARS AGO

January 15, 1898

Our city council met last Tuesday evening in special session and acted on the proposition made by Mr. W. A. Warren to light the city with electricity. They granted him a franchise for ten years and offered to contract for six arc lamps for the streets for a period of seven years at the rate of $6.00 per month for each light. They also made it a part of the agreement that Mr. Warren should furnish a bond in the sum of $2,000.00 for the faithful performance of his contract.
