They do things a little differently on the west coast. Just what those differences are is something Becky Heimerl is learning first hand as the new fair manager for the Taylor County Fair. Heimerl is originally from Oregon. She grew up on the family farm still run by her parents. “I have been involved with fair my entire life. The first time I showed in a fair I was three,” she explains. Through 4-H and FFA she showed dairy cows at the county, state and national levels.

December 24, 1997

Deputies hired after December 1 may soon be required to reside in designated areas outside of Medford. The idea was first proposed at a recent Law Enforcement Committee meeting, and last week the Personnel Committee agreed to have an attorney review a draft of a proposed residency ordinance. Once it is approved, it is expected the issue will go before the full County Board. According to Sheriff Bill Breneman, the idea behind the residency requirement is to assure greater exposure of law officers throughout the county.

December 28, 1972

Mrs. Gerald Schulz, Medford, has been hired as county health nurse on a part time basis. She will join the staff Tuesday, assisting Miss Esther Wilson, county health nurse. Mrs. Schulz is a graduate of Marion college, Fond du Lac with a bachelor of science degree in nursing and a major in public health nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse at Theda Clark hospital, Neenah; a public health nurse in Neenah; training supervisor at Marshfield Clinic and director of nursing at Golden Age nursing home, Rib Lake.

75 YEARS AGO

December 25, 1947

Leveling and filling of land preparatory to the construction of a new ice storage house was started the first of the week by the Eggert Ice & Fuel Co. The new house will be 40 ft. wide, 100 ft. long and 18 ft. high. Herman Eggert, manager, states that the house will have sufficient capacity for storage of a season’s supply of ice. Construction of the building will be started the latter part of the week. The former ice house north of the city park has been dismantled.

100 YEARS AGO

December 28, 1922

Mr. and Mrs. John Kapfhammer returned last week from Browning, Saskatchewan, Canada, to make their home on the Kapfhammer home farm three miles west of Medford. They were called back to Taylor County during the deer hunting season by the accidental death of Mr. Kapfhammer’s brother Matt. Upon going back to Canada, they disposed of their property there and decided to make their home in Taylor County again.

125 YEARS AGO

December 31, 1897

Hotel Wellington was sold by sheriff Nusser yesterday on foreclosure of a mechanic’s lien in favor of Otto Griesser and owned by Frank Wocelka. The property was bid in by Mr. Wocelka, who is now the owner.
