Nicole Winchell has been appointed as interim executive director at Hope Hospice and Palliative Care. She has been a member of the management team as manager of clinical services at Hope Hospice for the last four years. “Nicole’s hospice experience, background in nursing and connections to the community make her an excellent person to lead Hope Hospice into the future and to keep quality hospice services available in Taylor County and beyond” said Teri Rostberg, executive director of Hope Hospice for the past 10 years.

November 26, 1997

The long awaited breakfast program will begin at Medford Area Elementary school next semester. The School Board approved the program last week 6-1 (Southworth voting no, Hoffman and Hallgren absent). The school day was increased by 10 minutes at the beginning of the school year in preparation for the program. Up to this point, the teachers have been using the extra 10 minutes in the morning for class time or activities.

November 30, 1972

Charles W. Berglund, manager of Taylor County Electric Cooperative since 1950, has announced he will retire at the end of the year. The cooperative has hired a replacement for Berglund, the new manager to assume duties January 2. Hired was David P. Larson, Thompson, Iowa, power use adviser with Winnebago Electric Cooperative at Thompson. He is a graduate of Wellsburg (Ia.) high school and attended Central University of Iowa, took courses in electronics at the University of North Iowa, and served in the navy.

75 YEARS AGO

November 27, 1947

On Wednesday, Dec. 3, the Medford high school band, under the direction of Ralph Abrahamson, will journey to Colby to present the first in a series of exchange programs between the schools of Colby, Rib Lake and Medford. Mr. Abrahamson states that the band now numbers 55 pieces, which is nearly full strength. To date the unit has appeared at nine pep rallies, three football games, two parades, one radio broadcast, two basketball games and is anticipating a busy basketball and concert season.

100 YEARS AGO

December 7, 1922

The largest number of skaters out at Medford for several years enjoyed the sport Sunday afternoon at the Medford Lumber Co. mill pond. Close to 400 persons were on the ice during that afternoon. A combination of warm weather, good ice, and freedom of snow, which seldom happen together here this late in the season, is responsible for the sudden popularity of skating. Some who had not been on the ice for ten or even twenty years were out skating Sunday.

125 YEARS AGO

December 4, 1897

A farmer’s Institute will be held in this city on Thursday and Friday evenings of next week—Dec. 9 and 10, and all progressive farmers should attend. This institute will be conducted by Thos. Convey one of the leaders of this class of work in the state.
