The Taylor County Solid Waste Department and the UW-Extension designed a program to have area farmers collect their ag film plastics in super totes and bring them in during either a fall or spring collection date. The first ag plastic collection on October 25 in Medford and the 26th in Gilman successfully collected 55 full totes from 20 area farmers. These totes will be shipped to Rubbersidewalks in Indiana for processing into plastic sidewalk components.

The Medford Kiwanis Club will be giving away three Bus Stop Houses this year to students in the Medford District. The Bus Stop Houses will be placed at the end of their driveway to offer students protection from wind, rain and cold while waiting for the school bus.

November 2, 1972

Electors in the Gilman area school district again will vote on a proposed addition and remodeling of the present school building in Gilman at the general elections Tuesday. Voters will be asked the question, “Shall the foregoing resolution of the school board, providing for the issue of school building bonds in the amount of $625,000 be adopted?” The board explained that, while the bond proposal was defeated in September, the need for additional facilities still exists. It was pointed out that architects feel that costs established can still be realized but cannot make such a statement if the issue is postponed until next spring or summer.

75 YEARS AGO

October 23, 1947

U.S. Ranger Floyd Roberts and Warden John Marcon stated Wednesday that forest fires in Taylor county could now be classed as under control although some of them are still smoldering. A second fire in the town of Maplehurst over the weekend threatened the federal area north of Highway 64 but was prevented from spreading across the road through the efforts of 32 fire fighters organized by the federal department.

100 YEARS AGO

November 2, 1922

Sylvester Weiler accidentally shot himself in the arm Friday morning, while carrying a gun hunting. His arm was broken below the elbow. He stumbled on a root and the hammer of the gun struck a stump. He was brought to the Medford Clinic Hospital for attention. Sylvester is the son of Mrs. Theodore Weiler of the town of Goodrich.

125 YEARS AGO

November 6, 1897

The “open season” for deer hunting commenced on Monday last, and is now in full swing. The new game law passed at the last session of the Legislature—compelling persons not residing in Wisconsin to pay a license of $30 will prove of inestimable value in preserving the game of the state against professional pothunters. Up til last Monday about forty state licenses had been issued by the Sec’y of State. In Taylor County, county clerk Peterson had issued 330 resident licenses up till noon of Tuesday last, and applications were then still coming in fast.
