The Medford Area School Board opted to use $200,000 originally intended for staff compensation and education reimbursement as the funds to close the 2012-13 budget deficit and retain teaching positions at the middle and high school level. The board made its decisions near the end of the Thursday regular school board meeting and following a short closed session where it reaffi rmed its strategy for the $200,000. Following the closed session, district finance director, Jeff Albers announced $90,593 of the $200,000 would be used to balance the budget and the remainder would be available for salary and credits.

A plan to redesign the parking lot at Medford Area Elementary School has been put on hold following concerns raised by school board members at last Thursday’s meeting. Last month, the board approved the $50,000 expenditure for the parking lot reconstruction but never saw a plan for how busing would work. When the final plan was later reviewed by the finance committee those board members raised safety concerns.

April 27, 1972

Medford senior high school varsity sports athletes will be entertained at a dinner and awards program Tuesday evening. The meal will be served at 7 o’clock in the M-room, followed by the awards program in the Red-White room. Parents of athletes are also invited to attend, the parents to pick up their own tabs for the costs of the meal. The guest speaker will be Ed Bender, head football coach at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and Gary Reineck, athletic director at MSHS, will be toastmaster. Coaches of the various sports will award letters and make other presentations.

April 24, 1947

E. A. Schwechel of Wausau, chief scout executive of the Samoset Council, recently called at Rib Lake to organize a scout troop. Roger Reistad, a registered scout who has had experience in scout leadership, has been appointed scoutmaster. Meetings will be held weekly, on Thursday evening. The new troop will have access to a cabin and land on South Harper Lake and a meeting room in the village.

100 YEARS AGO

April 27, 1922

Contract was let at Eau Claire yesterday for the graveling of State Highway 13 from the Thomas Greenhouse corner north for a distance of two miles. The contract, which includes the crushing of the gravel, was awarded to a Grand Rapids firm. County Highway Commissioner, C. Kelnhofer, and Committeemen Chas. A. Strebig and R. E. Teegarden were present at the letting.

May 1, 1897

The Medford Poultry yards, under the management of Lee & Hosmer, is gaining for itself an enviable reputation among those who appreciate high grade poultry, and orders for eggs for setting purposes are coming in from all along the line. The proprietors have spared no expense in fitting up in first class shape, and have secured the best breeds of all kinds of poultry regardless of expense.
