Cornell drops two games, throws Thorp for a scare

By Ginna Young

Getting back in action, the Cornell boys basketball program faced off with a trifecta of tough teams.

Dec. 30 vs. Gilman non-conference (L 73-34)

To close out 2024, the Chiefs were on the road to Gilman, but were outscored in the first half, by 13 points and were unable to get the offense going in the second, leading to a 73-34 Gilman victory.

Leading for Cornell, was junior Carson Stipek, with 18 points, followed by sophomore Bryce DeJongh, with 14, and senior Hunter Anders, with 2.

Jan. 2 vs. Independence-Gilmanton non-conference (L 67-29)

Beginning the new year at home, the Chiefs then hosted Independence Gilmanton, but again, scoring just wasn’t there for Cornell and the visitors claimed a 67-29 win.

Stipek again led, with 12 points, while Anders and DeJongh each recorded 7, and junior Grady Abbott shot a three-pointer.

Jan. 3 vs. Thorp non-conference (L 61-47)

The next night, Thorp came to call and Cornell was ready for them, taking a slim three-point lead into halftime. For much of the second half, the Chiefs were in control or at least kept the game close, but in the end, Thorp pulled away, with a 61-47 victory.

Anders led the way, with 15 points, with DeJongh and Stipek each contributing 13, and senior Preston Fredrickson adding 6.
