Spencer narrowly falls to Columbus in girls basketball
Although they did not earn the win, the Spencer girls showed they were a team to be reckoned with this season as they took on the Columbus Dons last week Tuesday at the Spencer dome. While they did not continue their threegame winning streak, the Rockets showed they could be competitive against a team that finished fourth in the Cloverbelt-East last year, only losing by 2. This was major milestone for a Rockets squad that only saw one conference win last year.
In the Dec. 3 game, the Rockets outpaced the Dons in the first half, putting up 16 points to the Dons’ 4. Autumn Davis scored the most points for Spencer, sinking a 3pointer and two 2-pointers in the half. Montanna Kohls also contributed a three, and Ema Schultz, Alexa Weber and Carmen Krause each put in baskets.
The Rockets were able to increase their scoring output in the second, earning 19 points. However, Columbus seemingly figured the Rockets and came alive in the latter half, putting up 28 points. That gave Columbus the 37-35 win.
Spencer saw seven players score, with Davis leading the way with 14 points, including three free throws. Kohls picked up 6, Schultz and Weber scored 5, Hannah Schreiner and Krause each had 2, and Nieman chipped in 1.
The Rockets struggled at the free throw line, shooting 50% or making eight of their 16 free throws. The Dons also only shot at 50% from the line though, making seven of 14.
Krause and Davis tied for the most rebounds for Spencer, each with eight. Schultz had six. Krause also had three assists. Davis stole the ball four times while Krause did so three times.
Spencer will not face Columbus again this season until Jan. 17.
