By Ginna Young

Opponents of the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball program proved no match for the Knights, who are playing steady ball in each bout.

April 30 vs. Birchwood-Winter conference (W 14-6)

It was off to Winter, in the first of two road games over the week, where the Knights’ bats were alive and well early on.

“We were able to score six runs in the first inning, relieving some pressure,” said coach Andy Lorenzen.

Although Birchwood-Winter added six runs of their own to the scoreboard, the Knights continued to score and held on for a 14-6 victory.

“We were able to have productive at bats, but let them back into the game with some physical and mental errors,” said Lorenzen. “We need to clean up the little things in order to compete against the better teams moving forward.”

Senior Brooke Anderson was on the mound for the Knights, going seven innings and allowing 5 hits, 6 runs and 7 walks, while striking out 9.

Offensively, senior Teryn Close came up big, with 4 hits, while senior Grace Harycki had 3 and freshman Michelle Butler came away with 2. Anderson, senior Allie Turany and junior Bralee Schroeder all added a hit.

May 3 vs. Prairie Farm conference (W 11-0)

In the last game of the week, the Knights were on the road to Prairie Farm, putting three runs on the board early.

“We continued to have great at bats throughout the game,” said Lorenzen.

The Knights didn’t let up and refused to have the Panthers score a single run, earning a 11-0 shutout.

“We made all the plays, not committing a single error, and Brooke Anderson was extremely efficient on the mound,” said Lorenzen.

With Anderson again at the helm, the Knights had her for six innings, allowing only 5 hits, while striking out 6 batters.

She also finished with 2 hits for the offense, with Close, Harycki, Turany, senior Mahli Wilson, Shroeder, junior Richelle Raether and Butler all recording a hit.

“We are starting to put together complete games and look to keep it rolling into this week,” said Lorenzen.
