Knights get a glimpse of what they need to work on

By Ginna Young

Just ahead of a late-season major snow event, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe track squad was off to UW-Stout for a weekend meet March 23. The boys team tied for 15th out of 31 schools, while the girls did not place.

“Our first meet of the season had some mixed results,” said coach Sean Schmidt.

Showing senior leadership for the Knights, was Trent Nitek, who placed third in the 55-meter dash, with a time of 6.75 seconds. He also took fourth in the 200-yard dash, in 24.03.

Sophomore Alex Dixon also competed, taking 17th in the 800-meter (2:22.86), while sophomore Logan Jaedike finished 20th in the 400-meter dash (59.46). Both of the young runners earned personal bests for their efforts.

“Our new sprinters were still uncomfortable with the blocks and that impacted their times, but with practice, they’ll soon get much smoother and put up the faster times they are certainly capable of, in the coming weeks,” said Schmidt.

For the girls, senior Lauren Samardzich came away with 13th place in the 400 dash (68.35), as well as 21st in the triple jump, at 26 feet, 5.5 inches) and 25th in the 200 dash (29.96). Sophomore Megan Paff also placed 24th, in her first ever shot put, recording a distance of 25 feet, 4 inches.

“This was a big meet, that gave everyone a beneficial experience going forward and a reality check that more needs to be done, to achieve our individual and team goals, as the season progresses,” said Schmidt.Knights get a glimpse of what they need to work on
