By Ginna Young

Finishing out the regular season, the Lake Holcombe girls basketball program took a big win over an East Lakeland Conference team, before losing a close one to another.

Feb. 13 vs. Flambeau conference (W 53-50)

Lake Holcombe was at home against Flambeau, with the first half a battle on the scoreboard. The Chieftains were down by three points at halftime, but came back in the second to outscore the Falcons and earn a 53-50 victory.

“The team played really well,” said coach Chris Clark. “With Emma (Lechleitner, senior) out, we needed everybody to come out and play a really good game, and that’s exactly what they did.”

Freshman Katya Kuc led for Lake Holcombe, with 17 points, while junior Abby Jones knocked down a pair of threes, ending with 15 points. Freshman Payton Birkenholz was next, with 9 points and junior Chloe Lee was right behind, with 8.

Sophomore Alexia Hoffner and freshman Maria Andres each added 2 points to the mix.

Feb. 16 vs. Winter conference (L 66-60)

Closing out the week, it was on the road to Winter, where that proved to be a close contest, but ultimately went to the Warriors, 66-60.

The Chieftains’ final record sits at 11-13 overall and they are 9-7 in the conference.
