Putting a cap on the regular season, the Cornell girls basketball program split the last two games in the East Lakeland Conference.

Feb. 13 vs. Clayton conference (L 49-29)

Clayton was first up on the week, as Cornell took on the Bears on the road, but got off to a slow start on the offensive side. The Chiefs were down by nine at halftime and the second half was much of the same, with the game going to Clayton, 49-29.

“We held up against Clayton pretty well in the first half,” said coach Stacy Schroeder. “They came out in the second half playing very aggressively, which created too many turnovers to win the game.”

Leading for the Chiefs was freshman Haylee Ellis, with 8 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Alyssa Bowe also had 8 points. Junior Lauren Samardzich came next, with 7 points and 6 blocks, followed by senior Grace Harycki, with 4 points, and junior Bralee Schroeder had 2 points.

Feb. 16 vs. Bruce conference (W 50-38)

Finally, Cornell was at home against Bruce, looking for a win over the Raiders.

“We played a good game against Bruce,” said S. Schroeder.

The Chiefs took a six-point lead into the half-way break and while Bruce stepped it up in the second half of the game, Cornell was determined to take the win, doing so, 50-38.

“They put up a good fight…the girls were able to pull it together and keep the lead,” said S. Schroeder.

Ellis again led, with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals, with B. Schroeder notching 14 points and 5 rebounds, while Samardzich added 8 points and 6 blocks. Bowe contributed 5 points, followed by Harycki, who had 4 points and 5 rebounds.

Senior Teryn Close rounded out the scoring, with 3 points and 3 steals.

Cornell’s regular season record ends at 6-17 overall and a 5-11 league standing.
