Cadott headed to Neillsville, Feb. 3, with the boys wrestlers facing off in the Cloverbelt Conference tournament. At the end of the day, Cadott finished with a score of 187.5, in third place.
“We almost won the tournament wrestling two wrestlers short,” said coach Josh Spaeth.
Claiming top honors, was sophomore Iszy Sonnentag (106 pounds), who chose to wrestle for the boys team. Sonnentag took the championship in her weight class, winning over Chase Lindner, of Neillsville-Greenwood-Loyal (NGL), by fall, in 4:22.
“She wrestled outstanding and became Cadott’s first female conference champion…by pinning a NGL opponent in the finals, who she lost to last week,” said Spaeth.
While not making history for the Hornets, nonetheless impressive, were the championships earned by senior Axel Tegels (215) and junior Kaleb Lodahl (113). Tegels received his title with a win over Wyatt Karl, of Spencer-Columbus Catholic-Granton, in a 5:42 fall, while Lodahl won over Bloomer-Colfax’s Drew Ryder, with a 16-1 technical fall, in 4:28.
In the runner-up spot, was sophomore Monte Lodahl (126), who saw his match go to Stanley-Boyd’s Troy Trevino, by fall, in 1:23, as well as senior Caden Kingston, who dropped his match over Dane Luchterhand, NGL, in a 5-2 decision.
Freshman Owen Fasbender (132) came in third, with a win over Darrin Dorn, Stanley-Boyd, with a 10-0 major decision, as did freshman Brenton Faber (138), who won against Abbotsford-Colby’s Ayden Michlig, in a 5:57 fall. Freshman Jon Phelps also took third place, with a win over NGL’s Evan Kautzer, by fall, in 5:24. Sophomore Mitchell Reineke also took third, winning over Damian Sampson, NGL, with a 9-2 decision.
Bringing home fifth place for Cadott, were freshman Evan Lallemont (120), over Regis-Altoona’s Landon Miller, and sophomore Anthony Glenz (285), over McDonell-Elk Mound’s Hailey Pelkey. Taking sixth place, was senior Nick Goettl (150).
“Everyone gave maximum effort and always wrestled to their ability,” said Spaeth.
Next up for the Hornets, is Regional action. “Our wrestlers are peaking at the right time,” said Spaeth.
