Lake Holcombe sees pair of games go to competition

Lake Holcombe’s boys basketball team faced a pair of challenges over the week, dropping both the matches to the high-scoring squads.

Jan. 26 vs. Birchwood conference (L 75-50)

Hosting Birchwood, the Chieftains looked to get the upper hand, but were down by 11 at the break. Unfortunately, Lake Holcombe couldn’t catch up to the Bobcats and watched the visitors take home a 75-50 victory.

Senior Taye Yeager led with 19 points, followed by junior Brian Strzok, with 11, while junior Chase Burgess, senior Trent Nitek and freshman Emmit Johnson all chipped in with 6 points, and freshman Connor Kane added 2.

Nitek ended with 9 rebounds, while Strzok pulled down 7. Johnson led the team with 5 steals, and he and Yeager combined for 7 assists.

Jan. 29 vs. Eleva-Strum non-conference (L 70-58) 

After a weekend off, the Chieftains step out of the conference to host Eleva-Strum, where they played a good first half of basketball, going into halftime with a 35-26 lead.

“They couldn’t get the ball to drop in the second half,” said coach Joy Webster.

Lake Holcombe saw the game go their opponents, 70-58.

Leading for the Chieftains, was junior Ryley Craker, who notched 25 points, followed by Johnson with 12. Strzok had a double-double on the night, with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Nitek added 5 points and also pulled down 6 rebounds.

Yeager added 4 points the mix and Burgess chipped in with 2 points. Johnson finished the night with 5 steals and Strzok led the team with 4 assists.
