Lake Holcombe trying to find stride for consistency

By Ginna Young

Taking one win out of three games over the week, the Lake Holcombe girls basketball program is working on improving, each time they’re on the court.

Jan. 16 vs. Winter conference (L 60-58)

The Chieftains began the week against Winter, with the Warriors coming to call. It was close throughout, with Winter claiming a slim five-point lead at halftime, but Lake Holcombe battled back to outscore their opponents.

However, time ran out before the Chieftains could get the upper hand and Winter took the win, 60-58.

Senior Emma Lechleitner came up with a whopping 30 points in the near victory, followed by freshman Payton Birkenholz, with 16. Junior Abby Jones was next, shooting a pair of three-pointers, ending with 8 points.

Freshman Katya Kuc added 4 points for the Chieftains, while sophomore Megan Paff and freshman Maria Andres each added 2. Junior Chloe Lee also chipped in, with a point from a made free throw.

Jan. 19 vs. Prairie Farm conference (L 60-47)

A few nights later, Lake Holcombe hosted the Prairie Farm Panthers, who are second in the conference and show why, outscoring the Chieftains, 60-47, in the match.

“We are a team that we can see is improving, game to game,” said coach Chris Clark. “We had some issues turning the ball over tonight, but we are just going to continue getting better.”

Lechleitner again led for Lake Holcombe, with 18 points, with Jones right behind, with 15. Lee, Birkenholz and Andres followed with 4 points each, and Kuc added 2.

Jan. 22 vs. Flambeau conference (W 52-43)

Coming off the weekend, the Chieftains then made the short trek to Flambeau, coming up with a good win over the Falcons, 52-43.

Lake Holcombe is now 7-9 overall and sits at 5-4 in conference action.
