Marathon’s varsity wrestling team finished with a 2-1 record in Tuesday’s home quad. Marathon beat both Abbotsford/ Colby, 44-27, and Crandon, 39-25. Marathon lost to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 4531.

Red Raiders senior Jacob Smith and sophomore Blake Underwood won all 3 of their bouts against Abbotsford/Colby, Crandon and Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Sophomore Grant Salber won both of his bouts during Tuesday’s home quad.

Marathon wrestlers who ended Tuesday’s home quad with 2-1 records in their bouts are senior Derek Vesely; sophomores Tate Sonnentag, Reed McCain and Swayne Stencil and freshman Jace Ostrowski.

Local wrestling teams continue to prepare for the Marawood Conference tournament whick will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, at Phillips High School.

Edgar successful at Amherst quad

Edgar’s varsity wrestling squad ended up with a 2-1 record in Thursday’s Amherst quad. Edgar defeated Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 45-24, and Plainfield Tri-County, 35-18. Edgar lost to Amherst, 42-30.

The following Edgar wrestlers gained competitive bout wins against Wittenberg- Birnamwood: Isaiah Kraft pinned Bo Davis in two minutes, 11 seconds in the 113-pound weight class; Dominic Contreras pinned Gideon Hayek in 1:40 at 126 pounds; Tyler Schmidt pinned Thunder Whitewing in 1:01 at 132; Corey Schilling pinned Cardell Long in 46 seconds at 138; Preston Erickson pinned Joey Seegmiller in 2:44 at 165; Lucas Stahnke pinned Carter Waldvogel in 5:20 at 190 and Harrison Graveen beat Owen Schultz 6-4 in the first sudden victory, which is equivalent to an overtime in other sports, at 285. Austin Schreiber received a forfeit win at 150 pounds.

Edgar grapplers who won competitive bouts against Plainfield Tri-County are Kraft with a 16-0 technical fall in three minutes against Kyu Yang at 113 pounds and Contreras pinning Brianna Garcia in 1:42 at 126. Wildcats wrestlers receiving forfeit wins are Schmidt at 132 pounds, Erickson at 165 and Stahnke at 215 The following Edgar wrestlers gained competitive bout victories against Amherst: Contreras pinning Isaiah Hunley in 27 seconds at 126 pounds, Schmidt pinning Aiden Winn in 1:37 at 132 and Schreiber pinning Gideon Cole in 1:56 at 150. Kraft and Graveen received forfeit wins in their weight classes.

Athens competes at Phillips quad

Members of the Athens varsity wrestling team won seven out of their nine bouts at Tuesday’s Phillps quad that included Flambeau, Phillips and Rhinelander.
