Hornets collect strong win

By Ginna Young

Cadott’s boys basketball program faced a three-game schedule back from the holiday break, coming up with a win on the week.

Jan. 2 vs. Eleva-Strum non-conference (W 66-58)

First up to get the team back in the thick of things, Cadott went up against Eleva-Strum, finding they were evenly matched in the first half. The Hornets went into halftime down by two points to the visitors.

“In the first half, we allowed Eleva to get too many offensive rebounds, that allowed them to get some easy baskets,” said coach Shawn Schoelzel. “We did a much better job in the second half, eliminating the extra opportunities.”

The offense was also much better in the second half and Cadott pulled away from the Cardinals, to claim a 66-58 victory.

“The team played a very strong second half, led by Brodee (Burish, senior) and Braden (Schneider, junior),” said Schoelzel. “They were very aggressive at getting to the basket and going to the free throw line.”

Schneider led for the Hornets, with 27 points, 5 assists and 5 steals, followed by Burish, with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Nolan Blum came next, with 10 points and 5 rebounds, while junior Parker Davis added 8 points, with junior Jackson Barone right behind, with 7 points and 8 offensive rebounds.

Jan. 5 vs. Regis conference (L 61-55)

A few days later, Cadott headed to Regis, in what turned out to be a battle. The Hornets were neck-and-neck with the Ramblers until halftime, with Regis up by three, but the home team pulled away in the second half.

Cadott was unable to catch up and Regis took the conference win, 61-55.

Leading once more for Cadott, was Schneider, who knocked down two shots from beyond the arc, ending with 14 points, with Blum right behind, for 13 points, six of which came from three-pointers. Burish and Barone finished the night with 8 points each, while David added 5.

To round out the scoring, junior Cameron Allard shot a three-point shot and junior Nolan Freed chipped in with 2 points.

Jan. 8 vs. Ladysmith non-conference (L 78-51)

Finally, the Hornets were off to Ladysmith, but the non-conference bout didn’t go the way Cadott would have liked. The Lumberjacks got out ahead for a 78-51 win, making Cadott’s record 5-8 overall, while they sit at 0-5 in the West Cloverbelt Conference.

Burish connected on three-pointers several times, finishing with 12 points and 8 rebounds, while Blum had 9 points, followed by Schneider, who ended with 8. Davis came next, with 6 points, and Allard and Barone were right behind, scoring 5 points each. Junior Riley Sopiarz also added 2 points to the mix.
