Hornets split league games

By Ginna Young

The Cadott girls basketball program ran into a roadblock in the first game of the week, but shook off the doldrums for a rousing win to close out the week.

Dec. 7 vs. Bloomer conference (L 54-41)

Cadott headed to Bloomer, to open the week, where the first half was evenly matched and the Hornets were only down a point at the break. That would change in the second half, as Cadott got outscored 31-19.

“We got out-rebounded and that was a big factor,” said Hazuga.

With the Hornets unable to capitalize, the game went to Bloomer, 51-41.

“We are a young team trying to grow,” said Hazuga. Senior Emma Kowalczyk led for Cadott, with 14 points, followed by sophomore Taylor Hager, with 9, and sophomore Kennedy Nerdrum, with 7, while senior Bradee Burish shot a free throw.

“I thought we did a lot of things well,” said Hazuga.

Dec. 8 vs. Thorp conference (W 62-35)

Cadott then made the short trek to Thorp, fairing better against the Cardinals. The Hornets racked up 33 points in the opening half, while holding Thorp to just nine points.

The Cardinals bounced back in the second half, with the score more even, but thanks to the large lead from the first half, the Hornets walked away with a 62-35 victory.

“We played an overall good game, we got off to a good start,” said Hazuga.

Kowalczyk again led for Cadott, with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 5 blocks, with sophomore Lilly Spaeth knocking in four shots from beyond the arc, for 12 points and had 4 steals. Hager also came away with 12 points, followed by Nerdrum, with 10.

Burish recorded 6 points, while junior Kasey Moldrem connected on a three-pointer and sophomore Danielle Sikora added 2 points, with junior Tarynnn Donahue notching 4 assists.

“I think the girls are committed to improving and it showed Friday,” said Hazuga. “We have some tough games coming up.”

With the win, the Hornets improved their overall record to 6-2, with a 1-1 conference record.
