Cardinals pluck one from the Chieftains in opener

By Ginna Young Lake Holcombe’s boys basketball team couldn’t get their offense going in the first half of their opening game Nov. 21, in a road match against non-conference opponent Thorp. The Chieftains were down by 23-12, but managed to come tearing back in the second half of the game. “We had the game within five points at the 13-minute mark, but a few turnovers and some big threes from Thorp, put the game out of reach,” said coach Joy Webster. With the onslaught from beyond the arc, the Cardinals took the 67-37 victory over Lake Holcombe. Junior Brian Strzok led the way with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals, followed by junior Ryley Craker, with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, while senior Trent Nitek captured 6 points. Senior Taye Yeager also chipped in with 4 points and freshman Emmit Johnson added 3 points. Junior Chase Burgess also came up with 4 rebounds on the night.
