Chiefs seniors go out on top over Chieftains

By Ginna Young

Meeting on Cornell’s home court Oct. 12, the stakes were high for the Chiefs and rival team Lake Holcombe, in the last game of East Lakeland Conference volleyball action.

For Cornell, it was important to get the win for the seniors, who have four league titles under their belt and up to that point, a four-year undefeated conference record. In Lake Holcombe’s perpective, a win could help their seeding in playoffs, giving them a boost in confidence and it never hurts to go home with bragging rights.

However, the Chiefs had other ideas, taking the first set, 25-18. From there, it was smooth sailing, with a 25-12 second set win and a landslide victory in the third set, 25-3. That brings Cornell’s league record to 12-0 and 21-7 overall.

“It was an emotional night, as it was the seniors’ last regular season match,” said Lake Holcombe coach Beth Meddaugh. “The seniors played hard and did a great job leading the team this year.”

Leading for the Chieftains, was senior Ava Story, with 9 kills, while senior Ella Hartzell had 9 digs, followed by junior Chloe Lee, with 8. Lee also had 11 assists on the night.

Cornell will now host Thorp in the first round of playoffs, while Lake Holcombe will play on the road at Prairie Farm.
