Chieftains drop sets to league-leading Cornell

By Ginna Young

Taking on the rival Cornell team Sept. 19, Lake Holcombe played host to the Chiefs, hoping to upset the conference leaders. That plan was derailed, with many of the Chieftains battling illness.

Cornell won handily in the first set, 25-8, but the Chieftains bounced back to make the second set a much closer affair, but the Chiefs still came up with the win. Lake Holcombe tried to force a fourth set, but couldn’t do so, falling in the third and final set, 25-15.

Junior Emmy Kirkman led with 7 digs for the Chieftains, while senior Ava Story ended with 5. Kirkman also added 4 assists on the night and senior Emma Lechleitner had 4 kills.

For Cornell, senior Brooke Sime notched 9 kills on the night, followed by senior Brooke Anderson, with 6. Junior Briana Glaus finished with 4 kills, and also was strong in the back row, on both serve and receive passing, and had 7 digs.

Junior Bralee Schroeder followed that with 18 assists and 6 digs, and senior Makya Hetherington had 11 assists and 5 digs.

“Hopefully, we can all get healthy again and get back to playing a higher level of volleyball,” said Lake Holcombe coach Beth Meddaugh.
