Hitting the road to Gilman, for a cross-conference clash, the Lake Holcombe football team opened the season Aug. 25, with high hopes to knock off the deep Pirates squad. Those hopes were dashed, as Gilman put up 34 points on the board in just the first quarter.
The scoring didn’t stop there for the Pirates, who went on to accumulate 40 more points by game’s end, all the while, holding the Chieftains scoreless. At the close of the game, the scoreboard sat at 74-0, in favor of Gilman.
Sophomore Blake Winchel led for Lake Holcombe, with 20 yards rushing, followed by junior Ryley Craker, with 6, and freshman Kadyn Jones, who came up with 4 yards. Freshman Connor Kane also added a yard on rushing.
The Chieftains will shake off the loss and focus on their upcoming game at home with Athens, in what will be the annual veterans night. Military members of all branches will be recognized for their service to their country.
It’s always an important night for Lake Holcombe, to demonstrate what the veterans mean to the team and to the fans. All veterans are welcome and urged to attend, as well as the public, to show their support.
