Hornets learning as they go to see what works

Starting off the year in a big way, the Cadott volleyball program played 10 games in just the opening week, all against non-conference opponents.

Aug. 22 vs. Augusta non-conference (W 2-0)

To begin the season, Cadott hosted Augusta, in quad action. The Hornets made quick work of the match, taking the sets, 25-9 and 25-8.

Leading for Cadott, was senior Emma Kowalczyk, with 9 kills and 5 digs, along with junior Tarynn Donahue, who had 7 assists and 5 aces.

Aug. 22 vs. Abbotsford non-conference (L 2-1)

Next up on the night, was Abbotsford, who proved a little more difficult, winning the first set, 25-15. Cadott fought back to take a 25-22 win in the second set, but fell in the third set, 15-7.

Senior Kendall Webster ended with 6 kills, 2 aces and 4 digs with senior Makenna Harel coming away with 13 digs.

“We only played two of of the three teams that attended,” said coach Lynn Schreiner.

Aug. 25-26 vs. Cameron non-conference (L 2-0) To finish out the busy schedule, the Hornets took part in a weekend tournament at UW-Stout, going up against Cam-eron first, with a loss of sets, 25-23 and 25-19.

Senior Bradee Burish had 4 kills in the match, while Webster had 2 aces and 7 digs.

Aug. 25-26 vs. Wausau West non-conference (W 2-1)

Wausau West was the next opponent, which Cadott took care of by winning the first set, 25-18, before dropping the second set, 25-17, then claiming the third set, 16-14.

Kowalczyk notched 5 kills and 6 digs, followed by junior Kasey Moldrem, who had 3 kills, and Webster, with 2 kills and 12 digs.

Aug. 25-26 vs. Rice Lake non-conference (L 2-1)

Next up was Rice Lake, with Cadott unable to get the offense going, for a loss in the first set, 25-9. The Hornets rallied in the second set for a win, 26-24, but Rice Lake pulled out the victory in the third set, 15-7.

Kowalczyk ended with 5 kills, 9 digs and 2 aces, with sophomore Haley Mathison coming up with 5 kills, and Harel collecting 3 kills and 12 digs.

Aug. 25-26 vs. Medford non-conference (W 2-0)

Medford was the next challenge Cadott faced, but the Hornets handled them in good course, winning the sets, 25-22 and 25-15.

Mathison racked up 10 kills, while sophomore Karlee Davis had 10 assists and 3 aces, and Moldrem finished with 3 kills.

Aug. 25-26 vs. Elmwood-Plum City non-conference (W 2-0) Elmwood-Plum City also proved no match for the Hornets, as they took the sets, 25-4 and 25-18.

Kowalczyk came away with 6 kills in the match, with Mathison adding 6 kills and 2 blocks, while Davis had 11 assists and 6 aces.

Aug. 25-26 vs. Oshkosh West non-conference (L 2-0)

Cadott hit a speedbump in Oshkosh West, dropping the sets, 25-21 and 25-23.

Notching 3 kills, 2 aces, 4 digs and 3 blocks, was Kowalczyk, followed by Webster, with 3 kills, 2 aces and 5 digs. Harel chipped in with 9 digs.

Aug. 25-26 vs. CFC non-conference (L 2-0) The Hornets also had some trouble with CFC, dropping the sets, 25-19 and 25-23.

Kowalczyk had 7 kills in the match, as well as 4 aces, 6 digs and 2 blocks. Moldrem followed that with 3 kills and Harel ended with 16 digs.

Aug. 25-26 vs. New Richmond non-conference (W 2-1)

To complete the weekend, Cadott then faced New Richmond, dropping the first set, 25-12. The Hornets bounced back to claim the wins in the second and third sets, 26-24 and 15-9.

Davis racked up 13 assists and 2 aces, while Kowalczyk had 8 kills, 2 aces and 7 digs, and Mathison ended with 8 kills.

Overall, Kowalczyk came away from the weekend with 37 kills, 12 aces, 39 digs and 9 blocks, while Mathison had 40 kills and 16 blocks. Davis also came up big, with 18 aces, 73 assists and 19 digs. Webster claimed 15 kills, 19 aces and 51 digs on the weekend, and Harel finished with 6 kills, 4 aces and 74 digs.

“We played a lot of great competition at Sprawl and learned a lot about ourselves in the process,” said Schreiner. “I believe this was a great starting point for trying to find what works and I’m excited to see where we go from here.”
