Knights improve league record before post-season

By Ginna Young

It was another week of success for the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball program, as they racked up yet another conference victory.

May 11 vs. Flambeau conference (W 15-4)

“We are currently second in conference, despite our record,” said coach Andy Lorenzen. “We lost to Northwood-Solon Springs, who is undefeated in conference. We need some help from Prairie Farm next week, to beat Northwood-Solon Springs to slip the conference championship.”

Facing off with a league opponent of their own, the Knights headed to Flambeau, who didn’t offer much resistance. The Knights came home with a 15-4 victory, to improve their conference record.

“We started slow offensively, but picked it up toward the end of the game,” said Lorenzen. “We made all the routine plays and all of their runs were scored from productive atbats.”

Junior Brooke Anderson was dominant on the mound for the Knights, going all seven innings and striking out 10 batters, while allowing 9 hits, 4 runs and a walk.

On offense, junior Makya Hetherington had 2 hits, as did sophomores Izzy Schwingle and Richelle Raether, followed by Anderson, junior Abby Seidlitz and sophomore Bralee Schroeder, with a hit each.

May 13 vs. Chequamegon non-conference (W 14-7)

Over the weekend, the Knights were on the road to face Chequamegon, where they got off to a good start, notching six runs in the two opening innings. Chequamegon added two of their own in the second, but the Knights belted in three more in the third, along with one in the fourth inning.

The Eagles would go on to add one more run in the fourth, as well as two in the fifth, and a run in each of the remaining two innings, while holding the Knights to just four runs in the sixth, but with the large lead from early in the game, the Knights brought home a 14-7 win.

“The first game was a great game offensively, we were able to drive the ball and keep the pressure on them,” said Lorenzen. “Our defense was OK, with a few mistakes toward the end of the game that didn’t hurt us too bad.”

May 13 vs. Gilman non-conference (L 10-0)

The second game of the “Slam Fest” didn’t see the Knights have as much success, as they were shutout by Gilman, who claimed a 10-0 victory on the day.
