Cadott learning from some missed opportunities

By Ginna Young

Defense seemed to be the woe of the Cadott softball program, as they struggled to hold down the week’s competition.

May 9 vs. Regis conference (W 13-9)

The week started off on a high note for Cadott, as Regis came to play. The Ramblers scored a run in the opening inning, but Cadott answered back with two runs. The Ramblers added two more in the second inning, as well as one in the third and fourth.

The Hornets were determined and scored five runs in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Regis’ offensive came back to life in the sixth inning, with a run, and three in the seventh, but it wouldn’t be enough and Cadott took the win, 13-9.

“It was great to see the bats come alive,” said coach Kari Moldrem.

Sophomore Kasey Modlrem went just under two innings, allowing 3 runs and 6 walks, while striking out 2. Freshman Kennedy Nerdrum then took over for just over five innings, giving up 4 hits, 6 runs and 3 walks, and striking out 4 batters, to claim the win.

“She threw very consistently and made it difficult for the Regis hitters,” said Kari Moldrem.

Offensively, senior Eva Enestvedt had the hot bat, with 4 hits for the Hornets, followed by seniors Laken Ryan, Elly Eiler and Lauryn Goettl (hitting her fourth home run of the season), K. Moldrem (with her first home run) and sophomore Rilei Weeks, who all had 2 hits each. Nerdrum and senior Morgan Moldrem each chipped in with a hit.

May 11 vs. Fall Creek conference (L 17-0)

Next up, was Fall Creek, who came to call on the Hornets, and who brought their offense in spades. Cadott was shut out of the scoring, while the Crickets put two runs on the board in the first inning, then belted in 14 runs in the fourth, to claim a 17-0 win.

“We started the game off really well, but a few missed opportunities kept us from keeping Fall Creek from scoring and getting our baserunners home,” said Kari Moldrem.

Kasey Moldrem went almost all four innings, allowing 7 hits, 16 runs and 9 walks, and striking out a batter. Nerdrum then was on the mound to finish the game, with a hit and a strikeout.

Ryan, Eiler, Kasey Moldrem and freshman Lexi Bremness all had a hit each for the Hornets.

May 12 vs. Thorp conference (L 14-2)

The Hornets then headed to Thorp, the next day, and while the offense put two runs on the board in the third inning, that would be it, while the Cardinals added 14 runs over the game to take the victory.

Taking the mound again for Cadott, was Kasey Moldrem, who pitched almost three innings, giving up 10 hits, 11 runs and 5 walks. Nerdrum then went just over an inning, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs, while striking out a batter.

Weeks led for the Hornets, with 2 hits, while Ryan, Goettl, Enestvedt and M. Moldrem all came away with a hit.

May 15 vs. Thorp conference (L 21-6)

After the weekend to regroup, Cadott again faced off with Thorp, who came to call on the Hornets. The Cardinals got on the board first, with two runs in the opening inning and five in the second. Cadott put three runs in their side of the second inning, to make it a 7-3 game in favor of Thorp.

Neither team scored in the third inning, but by the fourth, the Cardinals added another four runs and one in the fifth inning. The Hornets came up with a run of their own in the fourth, then another in the fifth and one in the sixth inning, but Thorp wasn’t done.

The Cardinals knocked in nine runs in the seventh and final inning to bring in a 21-6 win over Cadott.

Kasey Moldrem was on the mound just over two innings, allowing 4 hits, 7 runs and 6 walks. Nerdrum then stepped in for almost five innings, giving up 10 hits, 14 runs and 4 walks, and striking out 4.

Eiler and Enestvedt led on offense for the Hornets, with 2 hits each, with Ryan, Kasey Moldrem, Nerdrum and Bremness all adding a hit.
