Knights down Warriors in back-to-back games
By Ginna Young
Facing off with the same conference opponent in two games over the week, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball program saw two victories.
April 25 vs. Clear Lake conference (W 17-1)
To begin the week, the Knights headed to Clear Lake for a blowout over the Warriors. The Knights knocked in two runs in the first inning, then 12 more in the second and three in the third inning. Clear Lake managed to put a run on the board in their side of the third inning, but that would be it for them and the Knights held on to take a 17-1 win.
Taking the mound for the Knights, was junior Brooke Anderson, who only gave up 1 run and 4 hits, while striking out 3 batters.
Offensively for the Knights, Anderson came up with 3 hits, followed by juniors Mahli Wilson, Makya Hetherington and Grace Harycki, with 2 hits. Juniors Allie Turany and Teryn Close each added a hit, as did sophomore Bralee Schroeder.
May 1 vs. Clear Lake conference (W 16-11)
The Knights faced Clear Lake again almost a week later, this time, on Cornell’s field.
“It was a very cold, windy night, and our girls struggled to adjust,” said coach Andy Lorenzen. “Clear Lake was vastly improved from last week, and they came to play.”
Neither team scored in the first and second innings, but the Warriors came alive in the third, scoring six runs. The Knights answered back with nine runs of their own in the third, but Clear Lake added two more in the fourth, to make it a one-run game.
The Knights put another run on the board in their side of the fourth inning, but the Warriors just wouldn’t go down, scoring another run in the fifth. Answering back with three runs of their own, the Knights were up, 13-9.
Clear Lake had one more chance to score, knocking in two runs in the sixth inning, but with another three runs added by the Knights, the game went to the home team, 16-11.
“Defense was lacking for both teams, committing a lot of errors,” said Lorenzen.
Anderson was again on the mound for the Knights, bringing in the victory, with 4 strikeouts, giving up 11 runs, 7 hits and 6 walks.
Turany finished the night with 4 hits, while sophomore Izzy Schwingle and Hetherington each had 2, and Wilson and sophomore Richelle Raether added a hit each.
