Ramblers capitalize on Knights inexperience

By Ginna Young

After weeks of waiting, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball program finally saw action April 14, as they hosted Regis in a non-conference battle. The Knights were already at a disadvantage, as they were down three players.

“We played alright for three innings,” said coach Andy Lorenzen. “We had a lot of girls playing out of position to make up for the absent girls and our defense showed. We failed to make the routine plays and ended the game with seven errors.”

Junior Brooke Anderson pitched well for four innings, striking out 8 Regis batters, walking only 2 and giving up 5 hits.

“I pulled her after the fourth inning, thinking we would have four games this week,” said Lorenzen. “Not one of the six runs given up in those four innings was earned.”

Sophomore Izzy Schwingle started the fifth inning at the helm for the Knights, pitching to nine batters, giving up 7 runs and walking 6 hitters. Sophomore Candice Spaeth then went in to finish the inning, striking out a batter and inducing a flyball.

“Offensively, we watched too many good pitches go by and were not aggressive enough at the plate,” said Lorenzen.

Schwingle was 2-3 on the day, and Anderson drove in junior Mahli Wilson on a fielder’s choice, with junior Makya Hetherington recording a hit. But, it wasn’t enough and the Ramblers took the game, 13-1.

“We need more time outside on a field together to improve,” said Lorenzen. “We have a good group of core players, however, we also have a lot of girls that don’t have much experience. Seeing things at game speed should help them improve.”
