NASP STATE ARCHERY

After two years of virtual events due to Covid precautions and the total cancellation of 2020, Wisconsin’s National Archery in the School Program (NASP) finally returned to in-person competition for its state championships Friday and Saturday and Taylor County archers continued the local tradition of winning at the Woodside Dome in Wisconsin Dells.

Medford senior Landen Viergutz excelled in his final state tournament by sweeping the overall boys championships in both the bullseye and 3-D competitions and, obviously, taking the boys high school divisions as well in each shoot.

Gilman senior Tatum Weir successfully defended her 3-D overall and high school state championships on the girls’ side. She nearly earned repeat titles in the bullseye shoot as well, taking third this year.

Medford junior Jenna Wickersheim was second in the girls high school bullseye shoot, senior Kirsten Weix was the girls high school 3-D runner-up and fifth grader Dylan Emmerich won the boys 3-D championship in the elementary division, which covers fourth and fifth grade. In team competition, Medford won the 3-D state championship in the high school division, while Gilman was third. Medford outscored Gilman by 14 as the teams placed third and fourth in the 3-D middle school division. Gilman was third while Medford was fifth in the high school standings for the bullseye shoot, while Medford was seventh and Gilman was 12th in the middle school division.

3-D highlights

Local archers performed exceptionally well in the 3-D state shoot with several individual high places, including some top-10 divisional placement that earn automatic qualifications for the NASP Eastern National shoot in Louisville, Ky. May 11-13.

The state 3-D shoot attracted 457 archers, including 241 boys and 216 girls. Archers take 30 shots total at a diagonal line of six animal targets that range in distance from 10- to 15 meters.

Viergutz defended his high school boys 3-D title with a score of 293 out of a possible 300. That equaled his winning score from last year. He finished four points ahead of Stratford’s Garrett Drexler. Gilman’s Casey Grunseth shot a 281 to place fifth in the division and Pirate Dalton Wisocky got into the top 10 as well, finishing ninth at 278.

Weir defended her girls 3-D title with a score of 286, three points better than her winning score of last year. Weix was right behind her at 285, while Wickersheim was fourth with a 280 and Medford’s Mattie Gebert was sixth with a 278 to qualify for nationals.

As the high school division champion, Medford earned an automatic team berth to nationals and Gilman also easily beat the 1,499-point threshold to qualify as well. Medford scored 1,683 team points, while Gilman’s 1,642 points gave the Pirates third place, five points behind Wisconsin Dells. Team scores are determined by the top six individual scores, with a minimum of two per gender.

Medford’s team scorers were Viergutz, Weix, Wickersheim, Gebert, Ezra Hillebrand (274) and Ashton Behling (273). Gilman’s team scorers were Weir, Grunseth, Wisocky, Wyatt Webster (270), middle schooler Reece Weir (264) and Dawson Grunseth (263).

Medford scored 1,556 points and Gilman scored 1,542 with their third- and fourth-place middle school scores (grades 6-8) easily passing the 1,349-point barrier to qualify for nationals. Medford’s Jake Erl placed fourth in the boys competition with a 275, just six behind champion Aiden Kruempel of Prairie du Chien’s Bluff View Middle School. Medford’s Kella Gebert placed third among girls with a 274, just four points behind champion Carley Schraufnagel of Portage.
