Gilman’s Casey Grunseth and Medford’s Kirsten Weix won the event’s overall individual championships, Medford’s Landen Viergutz wasn’t far off and Gilman’s Reece Weir and Medford’s Dylan Emmerich also took home first-place awards at the National Archery in the Schools Program shoot held Friday and Saturday at Medford Area Middle School.

The tournament drew 680 entries, including 455 in the traditional bullseye portion of the shoot (244 boys and 211 girls) and 225 more in the 3-D shoot (126 boys and 99 girls) with participants coming from all over the state.

The Medford Archery Club presented combined event awards to the top three male and female scorers who competed in both the bullseye and 3-D shoots. Grunseth won the boys first-place plaque with a total score of 590 that included 51 10-point shots. He got one more 10-point shot than Marshfield’s Dylann Brogan to win the tiebreaker. Viergutz placed third with 581 points.

Grunseth won the high school boys 3-D competition with a score of 296 out of a possible 300 and he was second in the bullseye shoot with a 294. Brogan nearly made history in the bullseye shoot, falling one shot shy of perfection. After 29 tens, his last arrow of the competition just missed the 10-spot, giving him a 299 after 30 shots, 15 from 10 meters and 15 from 15 meters. Brogan and Viergutz tied for second place in the 3-D shoot with scores of 291 that included 21 10-point shots. Viergutz was fifth in the bullseye competition with a 290.

Weix, a senior, won the girls allaround first-place award with 569 points, including 34 combined 10-spot shots. She won the high school girls 3-D competition with a score of 289 and added a 13thplace score of 280 in the bullseye shoot. She outscored Augusta’s Roella Weiss by five points in the combined scoring.

Weir, a seventh grader, posted a personal- best score of 291 with 24 tens on Saturday to win the girls middle school championship in the bullseye shoot. She added a third-place 3-D score of 266. Emmerich, a fifth grader, won the elementary boys championship in the 3-D shoot with a score of 263, beating 20 other archers. Emmerich also was fifth in the bullseye shoot at 259.

Medford’s high school team won the 3-D team championship in its division with 1,685 points, 20 more than runnerup Gilman. Medford edged Gilman by four, 1,496-1,492, to take third in the middle school division behind Stratford (1,581) and Auburndale (1,505).

Gilman and Medford tied for second place in the high school team standings of the bullseye shoot with 3,321 points. They trailed Cadott’s total of 3,379. Gilman had one more 10-point shot among the team scorers than Medford did, 163162, to claim second place.

Medford scored 3,080 points in the middle school division to place second behind Stratford (3,255) while Gilman was fifth with 3,011.

Medford’s Jenna Wickersheim was right behind Weix in the high school girls 3-D shoot with her second-place score of 281. Wickersheim was ninth in the bullseye shoot at 281. Medford’s Ezra Hillebrand was sixth in the high school boys 3-D shoot at 279 and 10th in high school boys bullseye at 284. Jax Gosse was fifth among elementary boys in the 3-D shoot (236) and ninth in bullseye (251). Jake Erl was eighth in the middle school boys 3-D competition at 260 and Kella Gebert was 10th in the middle school girls 3-D competition at 254.

Gilman’s Colton Lang shot a 281 to place fourth in the boys middle school bullseye competition and he shot a 264 to place fifth in 3-D. Dalton Wisocky was fifth among high school boys in the 3-D shoot at 283, while Wyatt Webster was seventh at 279. Brycen Madlon was third among elementary boys in the 3-D shoot with his 238.

Auburndale won the Sportsmanship award voted on by Medford’s coaching staff as well as visiting coaches.

Stratford hosts bullseye and 3-D competition this coming weekend. The Wisconsin state championships are the following weekend in Wisconsin Dells.
