Blackhawks soar over Chieftains

By Ginna Young

The Cloverbelt Conference is full of hard teams to play, as the Lake Holcombe boys basketball program found out March 3, when they took on No. 4 ranked Owen-Withee on the road. Going into the WIAA Regional match, the Chieftains were the No. 13 seed and lack a deep bench.

That showed in the first half, as Lake Holcombe went into halftime down 46-13 to the Blackhawks.

“Owen had a very athletic squad, and had a lot of experience and size on their side,” said coach Joy Webster.

The Chieftains stepped up their defensive efforts in the second half, limiting Owen-Withee to just 28 points, opposed to their landslide scoring in the first part of the game.

But, Lake Holcombe was unable to come up with scoring on their end and that proved their undoing, as the Blackhawks took the win, 74-28, putting an end to the Chieftains’ season.

Junior Taye Yeager led on the scoreboard for Lake Holcombe, with 9 points, while sophomore Brian Strzok had 6. Senior Harley Schroeder ended his high school career with 4 points and sophomore Ryley Craker also added 4.

Coming next in the scorebook for the Chieftains, was junior Trent Nsitek, with 3 points, and freshman Tyler Hattamer contributed 2.

“A special hats off to senior Harley Schroeder, who contributed four years to the Lake Holcombe basketball program,” said Webster. “You will be missed.”
