Cornell can’t get past Warriors and Falcons

The final two games of the regular season didn’t go as planned for Cornell’s girls basketball team, as they dropped both the East Lakeland Conference matches.

Feb. 14 vs. Winter conference (L 76-67)

In their last home game of the year, the Chiefs hosted Winter in a league battle.

“The girls fought all the way until the end,” said coach Courtney Yanko.

Despite their best efforts, the Warriors took a 76-67 win home with them.

Leading for the Chiefs, was senior Kelsea Popp, with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 8 steals, followed by junior Lauren Samardzich, with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks and 2 steals. Junior Makya Hetherington also came up with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, a block and a steal.

Sophomore Bralee Schroeder came next, with 10 points, 6 rebounds and a steal, followed by junior Marcella Boehm, with 4 points and 3 rebounds. Sophomore Alyssa Bowe ended the night with 3 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal, while junior Grace Harycki also had 3 points, and recorded 4 rebounds and a steal.

Junior Teryn Close chipped in for Cornell, with 1 point and 3 rebounds.

“They played a tough game and rebounded well on both ends of the floor, with 39 total rebounds,” said Yanko.

Feb. 16 vs. Flambeau conference (L 58-41)

To finish up the regular season, Cornell then headed to Flambeau, where the Falcons took the home win, 58-41.

The Chiefs sat at 9-15 overall and were 6-10 in the league.
